John Edgar Sutherlund, age 84, passed away January 5th, 2025, at his home in Mason, MI surrounded by his family. He was born September 29th, 1940, to Carl and Helen Sutherlund in West Branch, MI. John and his wife Darlene Wood, were lovingly married for over 60 years. John and Darlene officially started dating in 1960, and they married February 1, 1964. After graduating from Central Michigan University, John and Darlene moved to Midland, MI where John began his nearly 30 years in education. His career began with teaching 6th grade at State Street Elementary School in Midland. In 1968, Jalayne was born and 2 months later they moved to Williamston, MI. John accepted a position as the principal of Williamston Elementary School, became Assistant Superintendent, and then principal at Williamston Middle School. Rod was born in 1971. In 1972, John began teaching in Mason and taught 5th grade for the next 17 years. John spent the remaining 4 years of his professional career as a 6th grade teacher in Mason. Outside of teaching, John loved gardening and preserving the fruits of his labor. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, as well as camping and traveling. He shared these loves with his many friends and family members over the years.
John is preceded in death by his father, Carl E. Sutherlund, who was killed in action during WW11, step-father, Arthur Pratt, and mother, Helen Pratt. He is survived by his wife, Darlene, daughter, Jalayne (Keith Beaudrie) Sutherlund of Warren, MI, and son Rod (Julie) Sutherlund of Grand Rapids, MI; 5 grandchildren Jacob (Lizzi) Sutherlund, Tyler (Emily) Sutherlund, Travis (Katie), Ryan, Carly Sutherlund and great-granddaughter, Brinley.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 12:00 noon, Saturday, January 18, 2025 at Vantown Community Church located at 3504 E Howell Rd, Webberville, MI 48892. There will be a visitation between 10 a.m.-12 p.m. with a luncheon provided immediately following the service.
