Al Berkowitz Obituary

Al (Elihu) Berkowitz, 97, formerly of New Haven, CT passed away peacefully at his home in Parkland, Florida on Monday, August 10. He was born in Danbury, CT on January 1, 1912 and was a Connecticut resident until his retirement to Florida in 1965. Al was the youngest of five children of Isadore and Etta Minnie (Trunk) Berkowitz. Al and his first wife of fifty years, Ruth Roginsky Berkowitz, owned and operated the Kiddie Centre in New Haven, CT.

A great storyteller and “life of the party,” he possessed a wonderful sense of humor. The great loves of his life were his family: his two extraordinary wives, his two children, their spouses, six grandchildren and their spouses and 10 great grandchildren. His other passions were cards, basketball, dancing, good (but cheap) cigars, and great jokes.

He is survived by his adoring wife of twenty-two years, Diana Fisher Berkowitz, his children Richard Berkowitz of Westport, and Jane Brandwein of Chicago, Illinois and their spouses, Carole Berkowitz and Ed Brandwein, his grandchildren, Jody and Joel Beck, Emily and Ken Sandberg, Suzy and Michael Weksel, Adam Berkowitz, Melissa and Steve Jarmel and Hilary and Matthew Goldfine, his great-grandchildren, Sam, Zack, Rachel, John, Jack, Mia, Henry, Sophie, Carina and Ellie, his adoptive son (nephew) Stanley Novack and his wife, Muriel, and his step children Karen and Paul Feldman, Lisa and Eric Chamberlain and Arthur Fisher and their children and grandchildren.

Funeral services will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice. Funeral Arrangements in care of the Robert E. Shure Funeral Home, New Haven.
