David Power Obituary

David Anthony Power
David Anthony Power, 81, of Port Charlotte, Florida passed away Friday, July 5, 2019 at Fawcett Memorial Hospital in Port Charlotte, FL following a month-long series of medical crises. At his side through his final days was his former wife and best friend, Carmen M. (Mary-Day) Power.
David was born in Norwalk, CT, on April 16, 1938. He grew up with two major passions: his love for his Church, and his love for baseball. David played adult hardball continuously for 66 years from the time he was sixteen in 1954 until the onset of his medical condition this year. He played amateur baseball in Connecticut until he relocated to Miami in 1970. There he played in the Carroll City Latin League as well as in other independent leagues. In 1987 he moved to Port Charlotte where he relocated his independent automobile parts business. While transitioning to the Florida west coast market, he continued for a few years selling parts in Miami where he continued playing ball. He finally moved his entire business to Port Charlotte in the early 1990s and committed himself to playing in the Roy Hobbs Adult Amateur Baseball league in Fort Myers.
From the beginning, his generosity extended to his commitment to giving baseball players with marginal skills an opportunity to play ball. He believed in the beauty of playing the game, not the win-loss record. For years starting in his mid-sixties, he travelled back to Miami once a month to take hitting lessons from a retired professional baseball player. He became well-known in regional amateur baseball circles as the only eighty-year-old who could hit a seventy-five mile per hour fastball. David was known for his generosity of spirit. Back in Norwalk he donated uniforms to an all-Black team that wanted to get into the City League. In Miami and throughout his baseball career he was color blind in his choice of players for his teams. Whenever he was on his route selling auto parts to independent garages and he would stop for a quick lunch, he often bought something extra for the various homeless people he would encounter daily.
David was predeceased by his parents, John and Gertrude Power, as well as his sister Elaine. He is survived by his three daughters, Yvette, Suzanne, and Lizandra, and his former wife and best friend Carmen (Mary-Day) Power. He is also survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Brian and Kathryn Power, in Rhode Island, and his cousin Ellen D'Angelo of Waterbury, CT, and seven grandchildren.
A graveside service will be Saturday July 13, 2019 at 10 a.m. at the St. Joseph Cemetery, 815 Bosewell Ave., Norwich, CT. David was a devoted communicant at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Port Charlotte. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date in Port Charlotte. David was a neighbor of mine when I was wee lad growing up on Elliott Street. He mentored me and fostered my love for baseball, along with his brother, Brian, who hit me thousands of fungoes at the lot alongside Dorlon's Restaurant. I never had a chance to thank him for all the memories as well as being a batboy for the traveling hardball baseball team when I was 13-14. So long, David, and thank you. You are not forgotten. RIP

Rest in peace, Dave. You were a fine coach and a true lover of baseball. You will be missed by
many fellow baseball players and friends. If there's a game going on in Heaven, we know you'll
be playing in it.

Dave, you were a great friend and I will miss you on the ball fields and at Stone Crab games. You were always a great hitter and I remember one game in which you crushed a ball past me while I played third base. I retrieved the ball and handed it to you stating "Dave, that was your 3000 hit and you will now be in the hall of Fame". We all had a great laugh. Well Dave, I hope to see you one day and play ball again with you in heaven. Thank for great memories.

Dave, I just learned of your passing at this late date and wanted to express my condolences to you r family. We've known each other over 30 years first on the east coast and then on to Port Charlotte. I will certainly miss the calls and stories about baseball and the auto parts business. Much of the success I've had was thanks to contacts you gave me. Thanks. I know we will meet again. Until then Godspeed my friend.

Dave Power: A gentleman in the truest sense.

He loved his family and his baseball. He believed in competition, and celebrated being able to play the game with an unabondoned joy. His love baseball was infectious; seeing him in his uniform on the field, you knew all was right and that a Buch of guys were going to have fun.

Dave's graduation to the next phase of his life leaves a hole in ours. However, we have great memories of him and he leaves a legacy of baseball passion and taking care of others, a legacy passed along to us to continue to fulfill.

Dave, you are missed, will be missed, yet you will be with us, urging us to celebrate our game the right way and to take care of the least of us today and forever.

I am sure you have already organized a bunch of non-ballplayers and gotten them to the heavenly fields for your games there.

Rest in peace, my friend.

Brian...I was saddened to learn of Dave's passing. We had stayed in touch over the years, exchanging Christmas cards, and it was always so good to hear from him. I have wonderful memories of your parents, Elaine and "her brothers" and extend my sincerest sympathy to you and your family. Dave was a special guy...

I met Dave Power when I was 10 and he was 12. We maintained a warm friendship for 70 years. Dave was always a stubborn kind of guy but he was one of the most honorable men I ever met. I was glad to have seen Dave a few weeks before he passed. Although weakened by his illness he still did not give up and kept his wry sense of humor. I was reminded of the time Dave, approaching 80 years old, was playing hardball and batting against a pitcher many years younger. The pitcher yelled to his catcher in Spanish "Watch me strike this old man out". Dave then hit the next pitch into right field for a hit. As he stood on first base he yelled out to the pitcher in Spanish, "How do you like this old man now?" Dave Power, feisty as ever. I will miss you my friend.

The New Jersey Wonderboys offer our most heart felt condolences to Dave's Family. We will always remember Dave as a good Roy Hobbs Baseball Friend. Personally, I will remember him as a fair and honest competitor. A man who led through "good example".
Dave, may your Soul and the Souls of all the Faithfully departed REST IN PEACE...Amen.

His passion was baseball. In fact, he was the greatest ambassador for baseball I have ever known. He was my mentor and brought me closer to God through the Catholic Church. He has affected so many lives in a positive way. He told me, not long ago, that I was his best friend. If I live to be a 100, there can be no greater honor bestowed on me.God Bless you, my dear friend. Your spirit will always be with me.

My thoughts and prayers go to the family and friends of David. I always found David to be a concerned and loving friend who always put others first. Family was very important to him, followed very closely by his passion for baseball. I will miss his warm personality and upbeat outlook and optimism, but I am comforted to know that his strong religious beliefs have taken him home to his loved ones! Rest in peace my friend...you will be missed.
