A Life of Volunteerism
Hubert J. Sebastian passed away peacefully at his longtime home in Wilton, Connecticut, on June 8, 2021.
Born in Boston, MA, on November 3, 1921, and raised in Cambridge, Hugh enlisted in the Navy at the outbreak of World War II and served as Chief Pharmacist Mate on a submarine chaser where he saw action at Iwo Jima and other major battles of the South Pacific
After the war he worked at Lever Brothers where he was selected for executive training and rose to become one of the early pioneers of statistical methods for market research. He would follow Lever from Boston to New York City where his career took him to C.E. Hooper, and he later became Vice President for Market Research at Ted Bates & Co., the firm that served as a model for the popular TV show, Mad Men. He met and married his wife, Ethel, in 1951, together raising three children. He moved his family to Wilton in 1958 where he has resided since.
From a young man until the time of his death, Hugh volunteered as an active leader in various civic groups. He served as President of the Boy Scouts Mauwehu Council, Commander of the Saugatuck River Sail and Power Squadron, Commander of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 72, and officer of VFW Post 603 and was nationally recognized for his service to these groups.
Hugh was preceded in death by his parents, Alexander and Margaret, and two younger brothers, Paul and Donald. He is survived by his wife Ethel, son Donald, daughter-in-law, Catherine, and their children Caitlyn, Diana, and Christopher of Mendham, NJ, by his daughter Kathleen Sebastian of Seattle, Wash, and his daughter Susan Lineberry, husband Grant, and their son, Jack of Naples, FL. He is also survived by his sister, Doris of Natick, MA, and many nieces and nephews and their children.
Visitation will be on Friday, June 18, from 4 until 8 p.m. at Collins Funeral Home, 92 East Avenue, Norwalk, Conn. Further details are available at www.collinsfh.com. Latin High Mass will be said at St. Mary's Church, 669 West Avenue, Norwalk, on Saturday, June 19, at 10 a.m. followed by interment with military honors at St. John Cemetery, 223 Richards Avenue, Norwalk. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Animals in Distress, 238 Danbury Road, Wilton.
