Inge Heineman Maerowitz
Inge Maerowitz was born in Crailsheim, Bavaria on August 28, 1930. Her parents Sophie Strauss and Bernard Heineman were marries in Crailsheim, and lived with the bride's parents until 1933 when they and their oldest daughter Beate, all moved to Wuerzburg, Bavaria. In 1938 Inge came to the United States and lived in New Milford, CT, the moved to Westport, CT where she attended Bedford Elementary School and Bedford Junior High before moving to Norwalk, CT in 1945. She graduated from Norwalk High School in 1948, and then attended CT State Teachers College in New Haven, CT, graduating in 1952, when she married Max Maerowitz, then a student and NYU Dental School. In 1955 their first child Shawn was born in Norwalk, CT. In 1955 they moved to Fort Smith, Arkansas where Dr. Maerowitz was sent to serve as a captain in the US Army. They returned to Norwalk in 1957 where Dr. Maerowitz established a dental practice and their son Seth was born. In 1962 their son Blair was born and in 1967 their daughter Deena. In 1977, the family moved to Wilton, CT.
Her first teaching job was as a first grade teacher in Columbus School in South Norwalk. She then moved to Kendall School teaching kindergarten and taking leave of absence when their first daughter Shawn was born in 1955. She then worked at Tracy School teaching kindergarten until 1967. In 1977 Mrs. Maerowitz was asked to teach kindergarten at Ox Ridge School in Darien, CT where she remain until retiring in 1990.
Mrs. Maerowitz received her M.S. degree from Fairfield University, and studied for post graduate work at Bank Street College of Education and the Center for parenting Education at Wheelock College in Massachusetts. In 1990 she worked in nine preschools in Wilton, Norwalk, Southport, Easton, Westport, and Fairfield as an Early Childhood Consultant. She worked with the families of young children on parenting issues. She retired in 2010 when her beloved husband Max of 58 years died at home.
Mrs. Maerowitz also served as Vice President of the League of Women Voters. She was very active in the civil rights movement and integrating Norwalk Schools. She was a member of Brandeis University Book Group, The Y's Women Memoir and Book Group, as well as a private memoir writing group. She served as a volunteer at the Wilton Food Bank, as a driver for Meals on Wheels, and as a trained volunteer for Hospice as Visiting Nurse. She and her dog LuLu we often seen at assisted living and nursing homes in the area. She also worked in the Wilton Library helping to prepare books for the famous Wilton Library Book Sale.

Mrs. Maerowitz always told her beloved family that she had a wonderful, satisfying, and adventurous life.
A funeral service will be held at Collins Funeral Home, 92 East Avenue, Norwalk, CT from 11 a.m.-12 p.m. on Sunday 11/30. Burial will be Private. Shiva will be observed at Inge's Home on 11/30 from 4 p.m.-6 p.m., 12/1 at Shawn's Home from 3pm-5 p.m., and 12/2 at Deena's Home from 12 p.m.-3 p.m.
