James Minor Obituary

James Vincent Minor III
James Vincent Minor III of Wilton, CT died unexpectedly on April 1, 2023 in Norwalk Hospital at the age of 75. Jim was born to Betty and Dr. James Vincent Minor II in Norwalk, CT. He is survived by his wife Andrea Byrne Minor, his three children James Vincent Minor IV, Sister Mary Hannah (Emily), Andrew Minor, and his beloved granddaughters Zoe and Holly. An accomplished academic, he studied at Portsmouth Abbey, then Yale, and after leaving the military he earned his Juris Doctorate at the University of Connecticut. Jim reached the rank of Major in the CT Army National Guard as a Field Artilleryman. He originally joined the US Army during the Vietnam War and was deployed to Turkey. He spent the majority of his legal career in public service, first representing the City of Norwalk and then the City of Stamford, arguing cases that went as far as the Connecticut Supreme Court. He was a devout Roman Catholic, an avid cyclist, a birder, and a voracious reader. He was also a generous person who helped friends and family with legal issues; a supporter of those who were in recovery and even going so far as to welcome people into his home who needed a place to live. Most of all he loved being a father, grandfather, and uncle to all of the children in his life.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Friday, April 14, 2023 at 10:00 at St. Mary's Church, 55 Catoonah St., Ridgefield.

Jim and I were classmates at Portsmouth Priory from 1961 to 1965 and remained friends thereafter. I was always secretly flattered that he would be my friend. His devotion to Jesus and our church is now paying off for him; nevertheless I miss having him around as sort of a reliable, good presence. Mark

I will always remember Jim as my classmate and good friend since we were 14 in 1961 at Portsmouth Priory School. My love to Andrea and his whole family. Jim was a good and decent man who enriched the lives of all who knew him. Matt Flynn

Here is a photo of Jim running a marathon a few years back. A friend sent this to us. Jim was a wonderful brother, father and grandfather. I loved him so much and now the world will never be quite the same.

Ironically, I had just been thinking of Jim, when I received the notice of his death. I have very fond memories of him from Portsmouth. I remember him as a gentle soul that was able to keep his composure in the midst of being stranded on an uninhabited island with the rest of us boys. He was intelligent, friendly, and had integrity. We had a quiet friendship, which I valued. After graduating, I remember hitchhiking to New Haven to visit him when we were both college freshman. Our paths then diverged, but I once again ran into him in Connecticut when we were both well into our respective careers. We lunched together, and I again had the privilege of experiencing his grace. I regret that I did not contact him, when I was enjoying my thoughts of him. My condolences to his entire family. He was a fine human being, and his passing is a loss to his family and friends!

Andrea and family and friends, I've just learned this sad news, and I'm sooooo sorry you have to go through this. Though far away and infrequently in touch with Jim, I have a lump of sorrow in my chest. When we were children, aged 13, he was my first rooommate. My luck in this was borne out when, 55 years later, I hugged him goodbye with sharp regret after our mini-reunion in Vancouver. We both had so many first-time experiences together--arguing deep philosophy in our bunk beds after lights-out, pulling "all-nighters" studying for exams, climbing out our dorm window and scaling up to the roof to look at the stars and the campus, getting invited to his family's wonderful thanksgiving dinner, sneaking out (with others in this message list) for 2 am picnics on the beach below the campus. I mourn with you and celebrate the memories, which life's choices rendered too few and spaced too far apart. He was a good man. andand a good friend.

Jim - Ellen and I will miss you. We send our deepest condolences to Andrea and your children. You were a kind and thoughtful person with a deep love of your family and commitment to helping others. I wish I had spent more time with you but treasure the memories of the time we spend together. I was impressed by your passion for birding. When I see a goldfinch or cardinal or hear a chickadee, I will remember you. Geoff Greene and Ellen Costello

Jim and I were classmates at Portsmouth Priory and Yale. We were good friends who got together at class reunions and in mini reunions in Vancouver and Naples, along with Bonner, Greene and McGuckin. Andrea, Mary and I are deeply saddened by the loss of our friend Jim. We have fond memories of our conversation with you and Jim in the gazebo at Portsmouth, and visiting with you and Jim at the Bonners“ house in Naples. Please know that we have Jim and you in our hearts, and we will always treasure the fond memories of our time together. Love, Matt and Mary Flynn

Jim and I were classmates at Portsmouth Priory. It was my lucky day in 1965 when Jim asked me to room with him at Yale. I was invited to the Minors' for Thanksgiving dinner, which was unforgettable. We had many adventures together, and Jim even came to see us five decades later when we were retired in Naples, FL. Our lives took different paths, but Jim and his family will always be in our hearts. Condolences to all.

I have not seen Jim since Portsmouth '65, but he was a wonderful friend. I have always felt he stayed my friend over all the years. Heaven is a richer place now.

Dear Andrea and Family, I am very sorry to hear that Jim has died. He was a good friend; met him at Portsmouth in 1961 and saw him over the years with our gang (Flynn, Greene, McGuckin), including in Naples not so long ago. A great loss.
Thank God for our holy faith: we'll see him again down the line. Love to you all. Mark Bonner

Dear Andrea and the Minor family,
We were so sad to hear of Jim's passing. After reading about Jim's life's journey, you and your family had to be so proud of him in what he gave back to everyone he loved and those he worked with. I didn't know these wonderful things. Thank you for sharing them with everyone.
Our Flynn family sends you love and prayers during this difficult time in your lives.
May the blessings Jim earned here on Earth, guide, protect, and love you from Heaven.
Blessings and loving thoughts,
Ellen Flynn Laffey
