Jay Flaxman Obituary

Jay R. Flaxman, 80 of Bridgeport passed away suddenly on Monday, Jan. 11, 2010.

Mr. Flaxman was born in The Bronx, NY on March 27, 1929. Jay was a family man who was most happy when surrounded by those he loved and they returned his love in full measure. Jay was a veteran of the Korean War. After his discharge he worked for The Record Hunter In New York City and later opened and managed The Record Hunter in Westport. He took great pleasure in serving the citizens of Westport and enjoyed guiding them in making their selections. He called on his vast know-ledge of classical, pop and folk music to help them make good choices. He created a welcoming environ- in the store and was generous to young and old who visited him for advice and companionship. He was later employed by the Westport Transit District and once again enjoyed the comradery of Westport. He loved Compo Beach, bike riding, family campouts, folk dancing and working out at the Westport YMCA.

He is survived by his beloved children: David Flaxman, Jennifer Lividini, Paul Flaxman, Rachael Flaxman, and his "other" children Marion Joey, Jen, Todd. and Krista. He was proud and happy to be the grandfather of Chris, Amy, Nicole, Joseph, Trevor, Emma, Eva and Jacob. He was blessed with three great grand-children: Colby, Conner, and Carter. He is also survived by Anne Flaxman, ex-wife and best friend.

Cherishing his memory are his sister, Frances Wetzstein, niece Wendy Gemelle, nephew, Roger Gemelle and his cousin, Barbara Macieski. Arrangements are under the direction of the Spear-Miller Funeral Home of Fairfield. To sign an online guest register please visit www.SpearMillerFuneralHome.com

Dear Mrs.Flaxman, David, Jenny, Paul and Rachael,
I want to send my condolences to all of you for the loss of Mr. Flaxman. As a friend of Jenny's, he was one of the fathers who really was fun with us! What great times we had going to the Record Hunter and being able to stand behind the counter and act cool like we owned the place!! Remember this was the 60s, so we saw lots of interesting people come in!!
Of course later when I rode the Minnibus, and it was a MAJOR mode of transportation for us... it was great to see Mr. Flaxman's smiling face greeting us as we got on and off.
His bright smile and good nature will be forever etched in my memories of growing up. My best to all of you-

Although we have never met, I wanted to offer my deepest sympathies. You can turn to the Holy Scriptures for help. For Psalms 34:18 assures us that God is near to those broken at heart and saves those crushed in spirit. He will certainly comfort your heart.

Mr. Flaxman was a special guy and a patient I am not likely to forget. We loved to exchange quips as well as symptoms and advice. He so appreciated the support of his family and shared much about you. I miss him. Sinclerely, Margaret Drickamer, MD (Va Hospital)

During junior high, Jay's red and white minibus carried me from downtown to Old Mill Beach. Behind the wheel Jay was warm, paternal, teasing. Once Jay told me that he always let his kids explore and make their own mistakes, i.e. falling out of trees. As a parent, I've thought of this many times.

Rachael, did you fall out of trees? Are you glad? Do your kids?

Many thoughts-

My dear old friend, Jay. What fond memories I hold of our days driving the mini-buses in Westport. I always enjoyed our conversations because Jay was such a wise man of vast interests and knowledge. Of course, he always had a book with him. It's so sad to lose Jay too soon. My deepest sympathy goes to his children, Anne, his grandchildren and his great-grandchildren. Rest in peace, Jay
