Joseph Huzina Obituary

Joseph J. Huzina, Sr.
Dec 10, 1927 - Apr 28, 2018 Joseph J. Huzina Sr. died peacefully at home on Saturday April 28, 2018 holding the hand of his beloved bride Irene. He spent his final days at the home that he proudly built in 1967 on Edgewood Street which was next to the original Huzina family homestead. He was surrounded by his family: sons, Joseph Jr and Thomas P.; daughter Ann Marie Cox and son in law Bill; son John, daughter in law Pamela, and grandchildren Andrew, Shannon, and Jason; and son Paul, daughter in law Jody and grandson Travis.
Joe was born on Edgewood Street on Hunky Hill December 10, 1927, and was a lifelong resident of Norwalk. He and his brothers started Huzina Brothers where Joe worked as a truck driver until he enlisted in the US Army in 1950. He proudly served his country as Private First Class in the Korean War until 1952. Upon returning to Norwalk, he began working as a butcher, and then became an Operating Engineer. He joined the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 478, for whom he was a proud and active member. Joe and Irene opened and operated Ideal Deli in East Norwalk, which was a thriving community landmark for 6 years.
Throughout his lifetime, Joe was an active member of St. Ladislaus Church. He was a Lay Member of the Church Corporation, and received the Saint Augustine Medal in 2007. He was an altar server as a boy and remained so until age 88. He was active in all church functions, and could be called upon for service at any time. Joe and Irene happily participated in the church Christmas fairs where they were known for their Hungarian goulash and stuffed cabbage. The annual event was a highlight of Joe's life for many years. Joe was also an esteemed brother of the Knights of Columbus council 1253, and was a 4th degree Knight. For many years, he proudly served as the flag bearer for the Knights in the annual Memorial Day parade, and participated in many community social events and fundraisers.
Calling Hours will be held on Wednesday, May 2, from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Collins Funeral Home, 92 East Avenue, Norwalk. His life will be honored with a Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, May 3, at 10 a.m. at St. Ladislaus Church, 25 Cliff Street, Norwalk, CT 06854. Please go directly to the church. Interment with military honors will follow at St. John Cemetery, 223 Richards Avenue, Norwalk.
