OBITUARY: EVELYN BAMESBERGER
Evelyn Darlene Bamesberger, the daughter of Russell E. and Florence C. (Meester) Onken was born on February 12, 1931, at her mother's parents farm near Deweese, Nebraska and passed away in Aurora, Nebraska on November 3, 2025, at the age of 94.
Evelyn started school in Clay County at Dist. 56 (4 miles east of Glenville) until the 7th grade. Evelyn's family was moved by the government, so the Hastings Ammunition Depot could be constructed. The family moved to a farm northeast of Aurora in 1943, where Evelyn continued her education and graduated in 1948.
During WW II, country kids mostly had to stay in town when gas, car tires and other items were rationed. Evelyn lived in a different home in Aurora each year of high school and held several part-time jobs so she could attend high school. Her junior year, she worked Monday through Friday for room & board as an aide at the Aurora Hospital, which was then located by the railroad tracks and also worked the weekends for a paycheck. She also worked at Hestead Dime Store and Douglas Market throughout her high school years. After high school, she worked at the ASCS Government office which pertained to farmers; the office was located where Honeysuckle Lane is now.
Evelyn met Ervin Bamesberger at the skating rink in March 1948. and they were united in marriage on September 4, 1949, at the First Christian Church in Aurora. They had two children, David and Denese and Evelyn was a stay-at-home mom until 1957. During this time at home, she worked part-time selling ads for the Chamber of Commerce and clerked at the May Tag Store. In 1957, Evelyn began working full-time at Farmers State Bank, which is now Pinnacle Bank. In 1963, she began as a secretary-receptionist for the State Farm Agency until 1984. Ervin and she bought and ran The Color Spot, a decorating store for 9 ½ years before retiring in 1993.
Evelyn & Ervin enjoyed to travel and with their children, went to many historical places throughout the United States. After their kids graduated, they continued sightseeing, vacation trips and fishing trips with friends Eunice & Bob, and joined a card club, and later a senior card club. Evelyn belonged to a friend's birthday club for years. She belonged to a bowling team for many years as well and participated in many State and National tournaments. Evelyn was a member of Jr. Women's Club and held several offices. She was in J.C.'s for a while and enjoyed being very active in her children's activities. While her husband served as commander of the American Legion, they went to Hawaii for the National Convention in 1973. She enjoyed singing over the years in duets with her father in church and at funerals, and was part of a trio, quartet or choir within the community.
Evelyn was a member of the First Christian Church for 30 years, the Assembly of God Church for 40 years until March of 2016 when the doors closed. She and her husband were very active members in the Assembly of God Church, wearing many hats including mowing, cleaning, and general upkeep and felt it was their mission to pick people up for church, reaching beyond church taking members to out of town doctor appointments, bought groceries, and clothing items for people in need. She planned all of the funeral dinners held there and was the organist for 30+ years. In May, 2017 they became members of the Westside Covenant Church (was Evangelical Covenant Church).
Evelyn loved flowers and birds and many people would walk by their home to see what she was growing in her flower gardens. She was known to pull weeds after dark with the car lights on.
She and her husband moved to East Park Villa in August 2014. Due to health reasons, Ervin was moved to Long Term in November 2014 and passed away on August 2, 2017. Evelyn continued to reside at East Park Villa until August 2025.
