Gary Machan Obituary

Holladay, Utah, Gary Lee Machan, 65, died Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008, in Holladay, Utah, due to complications from a stroke.

Gary was born Feb. 12, 1943, in Grand Island as the only child of Donald Louis Machan and Opal Lee Kixmiller. During his youth, Gary's family joined the LDS Church. He was an accomplished wrestler at Grand Island High School and continued to wrestle while at Rick's College and Brigham Young University. Following his LDS mission in Britain, he went on to earn his MBA from BYU. He married Lynne Garner Aug. 12, 1966, in the Oakland Temple and they had three daughters, Robyn, Holly and Christie. Following their divorce, Gary was married to Laura Ann Kuenhold for nearly 20 years, during which time they had two sons, Mac and Jake. In his professional life, Gary enjoyed a very successful career in commercial real estate development with offices in Salt Lake City, Las Vegas and Phoenix. Gary made a name for himself in real estate, first working for Price Industries Corp. and then starting his own company, Machan Hampshire Properties, which was responsible for many structures around the Salt Lake valley, including the Woodlands Buildings. Gary was a truly unique individual who maintained an international network of associates. Many of these people became dear friends with whom Gary made an effort to keep in touch throughout his life. In his personal life, Gary's interests included travel, Harley-Davidson' Motorcycles (trips to Sturgis), adventures and animals, especially pigs. He will be remembered as a wild and crazy individual with a great sense of humor and a style all his own. We will remember the efforts he made to celebrate important occasions with his family as well as his dutiful care of his parents in their later years. Gary lived life to the fullest, taking every opportunity to travel to and explore exciting locales.

He is survived by his five children, Robyn (Ted) Buckwalter of Fort Worth, Texas, Holly (Robert) Wray of Salt Lake City, Christie Machan of Madison, Wis., Mac (Lindsey) Machan of Bountiful, Utah and Jake (Viviana) Machan of Salt Lake City and six beloved grandchildren. Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Don and Opal.

The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to friends, St. Joseph's Villa and especially CareSource the Residence for providing stellar medical, spiritual and emotional care during the final years of his life. At the end of his life, Gary wished all those who touched his life to know how much he loved and appreciated them.

Funeral services will be held at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park and Mortuary on Friday, Sept. 12, at noon. Viewing will be held one hour prior to the memorial service. Interment Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.

I would like to extend my condolences to Gary's family and friends.
I met Gary 20 years ago, and we have stayed in touch over the years...I felt a need to reach out to him recently to touch base only to find that I was too late.
I was invited by Gary to join him at Sanoviv after his bypass surgery, which I did. You all will enjoy this - I found a huge dead rat on the veranda at Sanoviv...this extraordinary beautiful, clean place.
I go find Gary, show him the rat, and what does he do??? TELLS EVERYONE about the rat!
Gary will forever be in my heart. He was a very unique individual.

Hey Walen: It's me, Baffo from the Gonzo Compadres, I will never forget our great times together on the steel stallions, sorry we couldn't have had at least one more. You were our fearless leader and will be sorely missed.

Our condolences to Gary's family. Although he was our cousin we didn't get to spend much time together after he moved to Utah with his parents many years ago. Sorry we didn't keep in touch as we should have. We wish you all well and know that Gary is in a better place and may he rest in peace.

Gary:

As one of your Gonzo Compadres (Bucko), I am really going to miss you, you son of a so and so. No one ever made me laugh or learn as much as you did buddy.

Just like Hunter Thompson, why did you have to go and die on me so soon.

I really loved you.

My best to your family.

I worked with Gary at Price in the mid '70s and enjoyed the camaraderie. Gary was often brilliant or seemingly out of control but always asset to the company. Our paths have crossed a dozen or more times in the past thirty years and each time, Gary has acted as if it had been only a couple of days since we had last talked.

To his family, you have our condolences.

To our peers, we have lost one of a kind.

Machan Family - I am sadden by the news of your Father's passing. I had worked for him on and off over the years and I must admit even though we had our difference, we shared some great moments. On very rare occasions (usually on business trips to and from Provo or Kamas) he would confide in me some very personal feelings he had for each and everyone of you kids. He would express his regrets like most fathers in a manner most touching... without betraying his confidence, the bottomline was that he loved and was extremely proud of you all! May you all find comfort and peace in knowing that your father was a rare one. He wasn't made to be bedridden - he was definitely a mover and a shaker - he made things happen! Having known Gary's sense of humor I take liberty of a quote from a movie, (for those that knew Gary-know that he would get a kick out of this one) "God we give you Gary... try not to tee him off!" I loved you Dad! He was a friend!
