Gene VanCleave Obituary
Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at All Faiths Funeral Home in Grand Island. Inurnment will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery with military honors.
Mr. Van Cleave was born Nov. 28, 1927, at Grand Island to William and Ella (Dobberstein) Van Cleave.
Survivors of the immediate family include his wife of 63 years, Mabel; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Sandra and Glenn Baker, Rae Anne White, and Gail and Jimmy Williams; a brother, Jerry Van Cleave; and a sister, Lydia Van Cleave.
Those also left to cherish his memory are nine grandchildren, Brian (Tonya) Baker, Wendy (Brandon) Baker, Adam Van Cleave, Jason Melgoza, Jamie (Joy) Melgoza, Onie (Jimmy) Whatley, Bree (Robbie) Carr, Chris (Randy) Aubert and Joshua (Sherri) Aubert; and 11 great-grand children.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents.
He grew up in Grand Island and attended Grand Island Senior High School. He joined the United States Navy in 1945. He was united in marriage to Mabel (Duering) Van Cleave in 1947, at St. Paul. Following their marriage, they lived in Grand Island where Gene worked for the City of Grand Island for over 25 years.
Gene enjoyed walking and bicycling and never missed a day of exercise. He was an avid Husker fan and collected coins and stamps. Gene really enjoyed his O.F.F. Coffee Club.
