Heather Gideon Obituary
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 3, 2010, at Peace Lutheran Church in Grand Island with the Rev. Jose Flores and the Rev. Michael Reiners officiating.
Burial will be in the Wood River Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Grace Lutheran Church in Wood River.
Heather's family requests that no flowers be sent. Memorials are suggested to the Heather Gideon Memorial Fund.
Apfel Funeral Home of Wood River is in charge of arrangements.
Heather was born June 21, 1974, in Lincoln, the daughter of James Harman and Sue Margaret Smith. She grew up in Lincoln, graduating from Lincoln High School in 1992. She then graduated from the University of Nebraska at Kearney in 1997 with a bachelor of science degree with an endorsement in Spanish/ESL.
Heather was united in marriage to Matthew Gideon on July 19, 1997, in Lincoln. The couple lived in Wood River. Heather taught Spanish and ESL at Grand Island Senior High, Ravenna Public Schools and Shelton Public Schools. For the past five years, she had owned and operated hg fotography in Wood River. She touched so many lives and made so many memories throughout her life.
Heather was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Wood River. She enjoyed scrapbooking, photography and shopping. Most of all, Heather enjoyed her children and being a very important part of their activities and lives. Heather also appreciated and loved her "Hope Angels," who helped so much and were there with her until the end.
Heather is survived by her husband, Matt Gideon of Wood River; sons, Tanner and Cauy; daughters, Sage and Ellie; her mother, Sue Smith of South Bend; her father and stepmother, Jim and Jan Harman of South Bend; her grandmother, Martha Smith of Lincoln; aunt and uncles, Brad and Sandy Harman of Lincoln and Dave and Pat Smith of Texas; grandmother-in-law, Alvena Katzberg of Wood River; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Bill and Joyce Gideon of Wood River; brothers and sisters-in-law and their families, Barry and Kristin Gideon and children, Jacob, Cole and Jack; Chad and Kristi Gideon and children, Cody and Gracee, and Brooke; and Corey Graves and children, Easton, Aiden, Reid and Emersyn; as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her grandfather Jack Smith, grandfather Ralph Harman, grandmother June Harman and Uncle Chuck Smith.

Even though I only met Heather once her smile, bright eyes and incredible courage touched my heart. I am still watching her slide show on facebook from time to time. I know I'm late in posting this, but I just found out about this terrible loss. I cannot even begin to think of the pain and loss your family has gone through. Just know God will not give you more than you can handle.
Heather and I were very close friends in High School and into College. I will never forget what a wonderful person she was how she could make everyone smile and laugh. God Bless you all and may the children grow up knowing their mother was a wonderful woman.

I was so sadden when I heard that Heather lose her battle with cancer. A couple years ago I had the pleasure of meeting Heather and watching her take my grandchildren's pictures. Heather, It was an honor and a privilege to know you. I am so glad you were able to photograph our wedding. We had a blast with you and it was so great to see you having a good time. Heather, was a light to many of her students. She touched their hearts & souls.
Heather meant a lot to my son, Wayne Bock, Ravenna High School.
He is at Doane College, student teaching in the Crete school system.
When you have a wonderful teacher in your life, you choose their path to follow.
He attended Heather's funeral today to tell her bye.
Heather will always be remembered by Wayne.

I knew her as one of my Kindergarten students and remember her bright smile that lit up the room and being a joyful little girl who loved learning! I was truly inspired and blessed by Heather's courage and words when working on the Cattlemen's Ball last year. She was compassionate and strong, and had I not known the battle she was fighting prior to our first meeting, I would have never known after that first afternoon with her. I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to have Heather photograph my children a few years back. I am from Iowa and was visiting a friend in Grand Island. We had a GREAT day with Heather and I will cherish the memories she captured for us. She inspired me to take up my hobby of photography.
