Patrick Hamburger Obituary

Staff Sergeant Patrick D. Hamburger, 30, gave his life with 37 others in the service of his country on Aug. 6, 2011, when their CH-47 Chinook helicopter was shot down in Wardak Province, Afghanistan.

Pat lived in Grand Island, with Candie Reagan, his future wife, and their daughters, Veronica Reagan and Payton Hamburger.

He was born in Sioux City, Iowa on Memorial Day, May 25, 1981, and moved to Lincoln in 1985 with his parents, Douglas Hamburger and Joyce Peck, and his brothers, Michael Hamburger and Christopher Hamburger. He graduated from Lincoln Southeast High School in 1999.

Pat enlisted in the Army National Guard in 1998, when he was a junior in high school. He was employed as a plumber until 2008, when he became a full-time helicopter flight engineer with the National Guard in Grand Island. Pat met Candie in 2005, moved to Grand Island with her and Veronica in 2008, and welcomed Payton into the world in January 2009. He loved spending time with his family and friends. Pat was a mechanical genius who loved his country intensely. Ensuring the readiness of Chinooks and flying were passions.

Pat is survived by his girls, Candie Reagan, Veronica Reagan and Payton Hamburger, of Grand Island; mother and stepfather, Joyce and DeLayne Peck of Lincoln, father and stepmother, Douglas and Shaune Hamburger of Knoxville, Tenn.; brothers, Michael Hamburger of New York, N.Y., and Christopher Hamburger of St. Louis, Mo.; grandparents, Willard and Jacque Hamburger of Omaha; stepsiblings, Jessica Francis, Jeremy Francis and Joshua Francis, all of Knoxville, Tenn.; and countless aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and brothers in arms.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Edmond and Ruth George of Hampton.

Visitation for Pat will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Wyuka Funeral Home, 3600 O St., Lincoln, Neb. Funeral services will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Christ's Place Church, 1111 Old Cheney Rd., Lincoln.. He will then be laid to rest at Wyuka Cemetery, with a reception to follow at Christ's Place Church.

Memorials are requested in lieu of flowers. The Patrick Hamburger Memorial Fund has been established at U.S. Bank. The fund is dedicated to the care and education of the most important people in his life, Candie, 30, Veronica, 13, and Payton, 2.

Pat would want to thank the friends and family that were with him along the way. He also would want us to pray for the safe return of his fellow Muleskinners, the men of the 2-135th General Support Aviation Battalion.

We love you so much, Pat, and are eternally grateful for the time that we had together. We will miss you and keep you forever in our hearts. We know your wonderful smile and generous heart will always fly high and brighten heaven's skies forever.

August 22, 2011

To Pat's family,
I never met Pat but my family feels a close tie to him. We live about 2 miles east of the Grand Island Airport and can see the Army National Guard Armory from our house. I always get goose bumps when the Chinooks fly over us. I always wave and salute to our fine soldiers. I'd like to think that Pat was in one of those helicopters a few of those times. Also, my son is currently in Afghanistan, he arrived about the same time as Pat. He's a Marine.
Prayers for all of you and I'll think of Pat every time I see a Chinook flying over me. He and his service will live on.

Prayer Shawls 4 Fallen Soldiers ([email protected]) is an organization with groups throughout the country who strive to send handmade prayer shawls and/ or lap robes to families who have lost a loved one in service to our country. Members of Trindle Spring Lutheran Church in Mechanicsburg, PA would like to honor your son’s sacrifice and memory by sending our prayers and comfort through a shawl which we will mail to you. If you are interested, please contact me at [email protected] with the names and addresses and what they would like to receive. We will send them as soon as possible. Also, if you know of any other families who are grieving the loss of a loved one who died serving our country, please pass along my e-mail address, as our organization can no longer get family contacts through the military. When I am dead, my dearest

When I am dead, my dearest,
Sing no sad songs for me;
Plant thou no roses at my head,
Nor shady cypress tree:
Be the green grass above me
With showers and dewdrops wet;
And if thou wilt, remember,
And if thou wilt, forget.

I shall not see the shadows,
I shall not feel the rain;
I shall not hear the nightingale
Sing on, as if in pain:
And dreaming through the twilight
That doth not rise nor set,
Haply I may remember,
And haply may forget.
