HASTINGS - Valden Clark Powell, 90, of Hastings, formerly Edgar, died Saturday, April 6, 2013.
He was born June 2, 1922, in Edgar to Laurene and Floyd Powell. Clark attended school in Edgar, graduating in the class of 1940. After graduation, he worked at Blue Valley in Edgar.
In 1942, he enlisted in the Navy. While in the Navy, he met Harline Rakestraw, and they were married on Feb. 1, 1945, in a Naval Chapel in Seattle, Wash. In 1947, Clark and his father, Floyd, purchased what ultimately became Powell's Grocery. Clark and Harline were both involved in running the grocery store until their retirement in 1982.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Ray Van Boskirk of Doniphan, and Pam and Mike Orr of Lincoln; two grandsons and their wives, Andy and JoAnna Van Boskirk and Chris and Katie Van Boskirk, all of Omaha; five great-grandchildren, Maddie, Abby, Drew, Emma and Liliana; a sister and brother-in-law, Jo Ann and Dale Johnson of Hastings; a sister-in-law, Marleen Powell of St. Libory; and a special nephew, Dale Van Winkle of Buhl, Idaho.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Williams Funeral Home in Edgar. Burial with military rights will be at the Edgar Cemetery following the services. Pastor Don Canady will be officiating.
Memorials may be made to the family for later designation.
