Michael Fitzpatrick Obituary
The oldest son of eight children, Michael was born on June 28, 1963 at Nazareth Hospital in Philadelphia, Pa. to James Michael Fitzpatrick and Mary Margaret (Williams) Fitzpatrick.
A graduate of Bishop Egan High School (1981), and a Distinguished Eagle Scout, Mike's life was molded by his deep devotion to his family, faith, and community service.
After graduating from St. Thomas University of Miami in 1985 and the Dickinson School of Law in 1988, he worked as an attorney at several law firms including Begley, Carlin and Mandio before serving as Bucks County Commissioner from 1995 to 2005. As Commissioner, Mike dedicated himself to modernizing county government and preserving open space. He was known to visit each department to hear their concerns and needs. He single handedly led the battle in Washington, D.C. to assist flood victims devastated by several sequential floods along Bucks Counties tributaries.
First elected in 2004, he served four terms in the United States House of Representatives, finally leaving congress in 2016 to honor of a self-imposed term limit pledge. As a member of Congress, Mike championed local causes on a national level and received recognition for his bipartisan leadership.
Among his many legislative accomplishments, he secured federal support for the Washington Crossing National Cemetery in Upper Makefield Township and led the effort to better secure passenger planes from terrorism - a cause inspired by Bucks County Sept. 11th families.
Michael returned to his profession as an attorney at Obermeyer, Rebman, Maxwell, Hippell in 2017. He received his Doctorate of Humane Letters from Holy Family University in 2018.
A true public servant, Michael maintained an omnipresence at community events, celebrations, and Eagle Scout Courts of Honor. He was known for always showing up. Mike possessed a remarkable ability to listen and care for the needs of others.
A loving son, brother, father, grandfather, uncle and husband, Michael is survived by his wife of 31 years, Kathleen; daughters, Katie Chapman (John), Maggie Ayling (Jack), and Molly; sons, Michael, James, and Thomas; grandson, Jack Chapman; granddaughter, Abby Chapman; parents, James and Mary; brothers, James and Brian; sisters, Mary Gilmore (Jeff), Kathleen Murray (Joseph), Patricia Morse (Paul), Colleen O'Brien (Cornelius), and Margaret Guenther (Mark); sister-in-law, Helen Gordon; and brother-in-law, Thomas Gestite (Donna). Michael's many nieces and nephews include: Robert Gilmore, Siobhan Gallagher (John), Tim Murray (Diana), Brian Murray (Catherine), Brendan, Patrick, Colleen, Mairead, Brigid, Owen, Claire, and Mary Morse, Meghan, James, and Liam O'Brien, Michael, Ava, and Aidan Guenther, Elizabeth Gordon Ropars (Shawn), Christine Baker (Charles), Rachel Gordon, and Nicole Gestite, and grand-nephews, Michael and Sean Gallagher, Leo Murray and Thomas Ropars.
Michael received numerous acknowledgements for his service to the community, including: American Red Cross Citizen of the Year, Greenspace Alliance Leadership Award, Conwell-Egan Catholic High School Wall of Fame, National Eagle Scout Association Life Member, Chapel of The Four Chaplains Legion of Honor, A Woman's Place M.J. Kirkpatrick Award for Leadership, National Catholic Education Association Distinguished Graduate, American Legion Post 973 Man of the Year, Jewish War Veterans Post 697 Honorary Life Membership, Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association Legislator of the Year, Boy Scouts of America, Bucks County Council Past President, Seniors Coalition - Senior Guardian Medal of Honor, Liberty Bell Chapter Ex-POW Service Award, St. Thomas University - Outstanding Service Award, YMCA - Vice President, Board of Directors, Levittown-Bristol Kiwanis Club Member, Sons of the American Legion Member, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (M.A.D.D.) Outstanding Support Award, Gilda's Cancer Support Club of Bucks and Montgomery Club - Service Award, Men of Malvern - Board of Directors, just to name a few.
The visitation will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 9, and from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10, at Queen of the Universe Church, 2443 Trenton Rd., Levittown, PA 19056, where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at noon. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for Mass Cards. Memorial donations also may be made to Queen of the Universe Parish, Washington Crossing Council Boy Scouts of America, One Scout Way, Doylestown, PA 18901, and the Guardians of the National Cemetery, P.O. Box 233, Newtown, PA 18940.

We first met Michael at our son Andrew's Eagle ceremony in 2001. It was held at the Carversville church.
From then on we learned that he was a genuine and honest gentleman. He was generous with his time and spoke eloquently at many of our Eagle ceremonies at Troop 34 in Solebury. He encouraged our scouts to live the Scout Oath and Law as a fundamental foundation of their lives.
He had all the attributes many aspire to attain. This country sorely needs more people of his caliber.

Dear Fitzpatrick Family,
What a life lived reflecting the presence of Christ in so many ways. Michael was an example of a human being who took the Gospel to heart and lived out the command of Jesus to "Love on another, as I have loved you." Too soon taken, yethe fulfilled his Baptismal commitment so young. May all family and friends who knew him continue, in their own way, his presence of love in the lives of other. I meet Mike sitting on a bench this past Summer while waiting for the Train to go downtown, He was very humble and I was honored to be there, just me and him talking together. Michael was true gentleman, an excellent congressman and a true patriot to our country. My brother just told me a story that depicts Michaels character , about 3-4 years ago as my brother had asked Mike how he was feeling , Mike immediately deflected and asked how I was doing as I had suffered a heart attack about 3-4 years before. Our family extends our most sincere condolences to the Fitzpatrick family. He was a man who truly cared about people, and his community, and we were truly saddened to hear he had passed. In 2006 our son with autism did a piece of artwork that was chosen to represent the state of Pennsylvania through VSA arts. At the congressional reception that followed, Mike spent the entire time with us, and we had opportunity to talk in depth with him about the needs of families who live with autism. He listened, asked questions and truly cared. He also co-sponsored autism legislation in the House. When we saw him a couple of years later, he still remembered our son's name and asked how he was doing, which really touched us. Mike was a man we admired and the world is going to be a little bit colder without him in it. We wish God's peace and comfort to the Fitzpatrick family.

Mike will be sadly missed. I have known Mike since we marched side by side as teenagers playing our saxophones on New Years Day with the Greater Bucks County String Band. He was a true friend and all around great guy. When he would see me at Scout functions or even out on the street he would always greet me with a smile and a warm hug. He truly cared about everyone. Like so many I was lucky enough to call Mike Fitzpatrick a friend. And like everyone he touched he made me feel like my concerns were his. We may not have always agreed. But I knew with 100% certainty that he was committed to doing his level best for everyone he touched.
Whenever I was politicking with Mike he was constantly approached by those who chatted with him about whatever their concerns were. Mike always made everyone feel like they were being listened to intently. He was never in a rush to end a conversation no matter how busy he was or how late the hour.
The secret to Mike was sincerity. He was not trying to make people feel like he cared about them. He really did care about them.
Mike was a politician in the best sense of the word. He put the needs of his constituents, even those who opposed him, first. Always.
I am very lucky to have known him.

I only knew Mr. Fitzpatrick from the MANY times I saw him at veteran events. He attended/was apart of several Warriors Watch Rider welcome homes and Washington's Crossing National Cemetery.
I may not have known him like all of you, but I only had to meet him once and shake his hand to know his character and what he was about. And Brian is an example of this as well.

Just want to take the time to send out my condolences to the Fitzpatrick family. I was lucky enough to go to school with both Michael Fitzpatrick and his wife Kathy Fitzpatrick. He saw my son off to the USMC and was key to getting him some help when he returned home from Afghanistan. Years later he put our 2012 Pennsylvania State Championship into the 112th Congressional record. This meant the world to those girls I coached. Kathy he was a good man and I am sorry. Deepest condolences to the entire Fitzpatrick family. Mike has done so many for myself and my family members on top of the entire community. True legend in many peoples eyes. Such an Amazing man. As my dad (Angelo) would call him hes my buddy. I can remember one election year my dad would be standing over at St. Anns church and even at the age of 83 he wasnt leaving until his buddy (Mike) told he it was over & victory was end result. So many other stories. May you Rest In Peace Mike gone but never forgotten. Angelo has his buddy with him. Im sure hell have you playing cards with him & Bake (Gus) watch them they cheat. Fly High. Rest easy.
