Alexandra Littauer Obituary

Obituary
ALEXANDRA LITTAUER
ITHACA - Alexandra Littauer, died peacefully March 15, 2005 after a short illness. She was born July 12, 1927 in Leipzig, Germany. Alexandra was devoted to her husband, Raphael for 55 years of marriage. She was a wonderful mother to her children, Ben and Celia; and a proud and loving grandmother to Ariana, Ross, Rachel, Andrew, and Jeffrey. She loved and admired her son-in-law, Daniel Clement; and her daughter-in-law, Kathy Kerby. To all of her family and her grandchildren's close friends, she was known as "Maman."Alexandra moved to Ithaca in 1950, and received her Master's degree in French Literature from Cornell University. Her first job in Ithaca was as a roving salesperson at Rothschild's Department Store, where she learned English on the job. She later developed the FLES program (Foreign Languages in Elementary Schools.) Many Ithaca students in grades 4 through 6 kindled their love of French in Madame Littauer's classes. Alexandra also touched the lives of many students while teaching at Cornell University for thirty years. In their retirement, Alexandra and Raphael became enthusiastic birders, traveling the country and parts of the world in search of rare and beautiful species. She faithfully kept a daily log of the birds that visited her home. She was a wise and peace-loving woman. Alexandra leaves behind a legacy of spellbinding stories of her life. She will remain close to the hearts of all who knew her.Funeral arrangements under the care of Bangs Funeral Home are private. No gifts or flowers, please.
