CHARLES GREGORY STITT
BATH - Charles "Charlie" Gregory Stitt, 85, a resident of 14 Warden St., Bath, NY was called home on April 2, 2010.
Charlie was born on March 2, 1925, in Monroe, NY and was the son of the late John and Bela Leota (Van Kueren) Stitt. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and served in the Pacific conflict of World War II. After his service to his country he went on to complete his college education at Cortland State University, where he received a Masters Degree in Education.
Prior to his retirement, Charlie began his teaching career at Campbell Central School and went on to Savona Central School where he taught math, coached varsity soccer and went on to become Vice-Principal. He was deeply respected by all students, staff and the community throughout his teaching career.
Aside from the love and devotion that Charlie had for his family, community service and music were the passions of his life. He was a charter member of the Bath Ambulance Corp., and was an active member for over twenty five years, logging more than 480,000 miles of service. He was a dedicated volunteer for the local Red Cross, assisting at blood drives throughout the region, during which time he donated twenty two gallons of blood. He was also a volunteer at Ira Davenport Hospital for fifteen years.
Charlie was a long time member of the St. Mary's Choir, the Hornell Area Wind Ensemble, and he also sang with the Hornell chapter of the Barbershop Quartets of America for fifty years. Other hobbies of his included biking, gymnastics, canoeing and refereeing soccer.
He is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Bonnie (Timmerman); his seven children; sons, Michael (Karen) of Williamson, NY, Timothy (Lori) of Oswego, NY, Charles (Angela) of Byron, GA; daughters, Kathy (Cordell) Burnham of Ocean Isle Beach, NC, Nancy (Bob) Leach of Trumansburg, NY, Margaret (Dave) Jenkins of Logan, OH, Sarah (Vincent) Anastasi of Grove City, PA; 19 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild; two brothers, John and Richard of Monroe, NY; one sister, Henrietta (Jones) Ijamerville, MD. He was predeceased by his wife, Dolores (Cataldo) in 1963; his brother, Harry; and his sister, Edna (Vitarelli).
The family will be present to receive friends Sunday, April 11th, from 5-7 p.m. at Bond-Davis Funeral Home, 107 East Steuben Street, Bath, NY.
There will be a memorial service to celebrate Charlie's life with music and remembrances on Monday, April 12th, 10:30 a.m. at Saint Mary's Catholic Church, 32 East Morris Street, Bath, NY. A reception will follow at O'Malley Hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bath Ambulance Corp. or the American Red Cross.
