Gail was my mentor and a inspiration to me to become the paramedic and Educator that I am today. She took the time to believe in me and push me to want to become a mirror of her. She touched so many lives. Former student 2007.

Jim,

I am so sorry for you loss. Gail has been such an insipration to so many of us in the EMS community. Her compassion, and dedication to teaching is a trait that is a rarity. I will miss her stories about her dogs that we used to share. My prayers are with you during these trying times. Take care.

Gail will be missed for her dedication and compassion for providing the very best care for patients handled by the EMS system. She taught with this philosophy at TC3 and in Syracuse. She practiced what she taught as a member of the Lansing Ambulance Company for a number of years and was the first female Director of this ambulance service. Her compassion extended over for animals. One early example was her adoption of a cat that was scheduled to be put down after being used in an ET class.

Jim and family,

I have known Gail for many years and a former paramedic student of hers at TC3 class of 1995, she was very open, caring and attentive of her students and accepted nothing less than perfection...she inspired many students of different backgrounds over the years to do the same...you should all be very proud that she made a difference in this world and her legacy lives on in her former students and those affected by us as well...she will be missed.

Jim, I am so sorry to learn of the loss of Gail. As you know, we were always good friends and did a lot of foolish things together, as well as to others at work, especially on April Fool's Day. She was a wonderful teacher in the health field and will be sorely missed.

I'm so sad to hear of Gail's passing. During the mid 1980's I was an RN in the Emergency Department at CMC. My first EMS classes were with Gail. I learn much from her and she was a vital part of the high quality of care delivered with Bangs and the volunteer crews at the time. Even after she moved on to Upstate, she would always have time to stop and talk with me when we ran in to each other in Ithaca and ask how I was doing. Gail had a passion and spirit for life that few have. My condolences to her family this is a huge loss.

Dear Jim and other members of Gail's family and friends

I was so very sorry to hear of Gail's death, and I know it must be hard for you. Gail was a woman who loved life and lived it to the fullest. I will always remember her fondly and I will also greatly miss her at the next paramedic refresher, not just for her teaching but for catching up on world and local politics, the antics of her animals, as well as finding out the latest gossip. Gail liked to get to know her students, and always made herself available when they were in trouble. She was also a great EMS resource outside of the classroom. I am honored to have known her and to have had her as my friend and I will greatly miss her.

Best Regards,

Wendy Hoose

Dear Jim and the Johnston family,
I am deeply saddened to hear of the loss of a wonderful teacher and friend. She was so dedicated and when she taught she made me feel like learning more and more. She was an inspiration to me and I will miss her deeply. She once told our class that a EMT is like a duck swimming on a pond. We all looked at each other and wondered what she meant. She explained--On the surface the duck is calm but underneath the water his feet are just a moving. I will never forget that because it was, oh, so true. I will miss her deeply, was honored to have known her, and will never forget her. My prayers are with you Jim and the Johnston family. God Bless you Gail and THANK YOU!!!

Gail was a great woman! How many people can say that they have honestly devoted years and years to helping others... Gail was a very successful and powerful woman who touched the lives of thousands of people and will continue to do so. She has given such a wonderful gift to the communities surrounding her that others will be so giving as to help others in desperate times of need! Some people just leave footprints on others hearts. Gail was one of those people. She will be missed by all but never forgotten her compassion for others will remain. We should be celebrating Gail's life she was one heck of a woman !!!!!

For anyone who wishes to make a donation in Gail's memory, I think the most appropriate recipients would be either of the following:

Upstate Emergency Medicine, Inc.
c/o Janice Harvey
750 E. Adams Street, Rm. 913 JH
Syracuse, NY 13210

The Department of Emergency Medicine is considering the establishment of a scholarship or other appropriate memorial in Gail's name for the training of paramedics.

The other possibility would be:

SPCA of Tompkins County
1640 Hanshaw Road
Ithaca, NY 14850

Over the years Gail and I have been blessed with many abandoned dogs and cats from local SPCAs.

Thank you again for all of your sympathy and support during these very difficult days.

Dear Jim,
It was with great sadness and surprise that I heard of Gail's passing. She was truly a remarkable woman, teacher and friend. We first meet over 23 years ago when I was a very young EMT student at TC3. Her teaching style and passion for EMS and her students was contagious. Through the years she continued to influence me at many important forks in life's road; a chance meeting where she informed me that I could take the EMT refresher instead of the original class, encouraging me to take the SUNY Paramedic Progam, providing me with the oppurtunities to teach for her and her support and friendship as I completed the LeMoyne Physician Assistant program. Many people have had the same wonderful oppurtunities to be touched, instructed and guided by Gail. Paramedic, CC, Intermediate and EMT-B students, medical students, Emergency Medicine residents and more. All of whom have taken that knowledge to go and help people. A wise poet once said that to know that one person has lived a little easier or happier, is to have truly succeeded. Gail, you have done for more people than any of else will ever know. Like a stone that is thrown in a pond, the ripples will go one forever. I am honored to say that Gail was my teacher and mentor and truly blessed to say that she was my friend and colleague. She will be truly missed by all that knew her but her legacy will live on in those that she has touched.

Gail was a good friend and an exceptionally wonderful person with a heart of gold. She was a regular in my deli and we had grown to be good friends. After my stroke forced me to leave we remained in touch by email. She was admired by everyone that knew her and will be greatly missed by all.

Gail was such a strong, wonderful woman! She helped me in EMT I and CC class and taught me to stick with it and not give up.. I will make you proud Gail, I know you are watching down on me and I will succeed. You taught so many people so much! Including teaching my parents in CC class! You were loved by all and you will never be forgotten! You made and impact on several lives!!! Not many people can say that!

To the Weinstein and Johnston Families:

I had the pleasure of being Gail's administrative support for a little more than a year and half and knew from day one that Gail was a remarkable person. She touched my life immensely in the short time that I was blessed to know her and I will never forget all that I learned from her. Although my heart is so sad the good memories will keep her alive in my heart always.

Gail,

Thank you for sharing so much of your life with us (your extended family). You touched soooo many lives. I found out around 0100 hours via text message and by noon had heard from many more of my friends and co-workers throughout the state. It goes to show your character. An amazing person, always smiling. No words can ease your pain, only time will change your hurt. I know we have another angel with us now.

She will be missed by so many people, she got so many people in the EMS program in the early years at TC3 for the basic EMT's up to EMT-3 then Paramedics. I for one she helped get as far as I did in serving as a volunteer and moved us to be the best in what we did. Rest in peace you willl never be forgotten by so many people who knew you Professionally and as afriend.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Weinstein family. Gail was instrumental in my paramedic training and years later in my EMS teaching career. After answering thousands of calls as a paramedic, many other people who never met Gail were also beneficiaries of her wisdom, leadership, and compassion. Your loss is shared by more people than you will ever know.

I had the good fortune to be a part of Gail's Level 3 class at TC3 in 2007 and because of her thoughtful encouragement and guidance, to be a part of the SUNY Paramedic program in 2008. I have encountered very few teachers who provide such encouragement and inspiration. So she has left us. I imagine there will be great joy in heaven when she arrives, and she will be greatly missed here.

So many of us have lost an inspired instructor. She was always so involved with the classes and wanted everyone to be "the best that they could be." I was proud to be among the first paramedic class that was held at TC-3 and then had the privilege of teaching with her for several years before moving to North Carolina, but we shared a history at Cornell even prior to that when she worked in Development. Jim, we are thinking of you.
