GLADYS A. SPERLING
ITHACA - Gladys A. Sperling died January 17, 2003 in her home.She was born July 25, 1904 in Pulaski, New York. She attended both grade and high school there, graduating in 1921.Gladys graduated from Oberlin College in Ohio with a major in chemistry in 1927. She taught mathematics and science in high schools in Herkimer and Sandy Creek for approximately five years. She completed her graduate work at Cornell University with a Master's Degree.In 1936 she began working in the Animal Nutrition Department, caring for the rat colony in connection with work on longevity being done under a Rockefeller Grant. Gladys greatly enjoyed her work with Dr. Clive McCay and she retired in 1970 from the Animal Sciences Department as a research associate.She continued to explore many interests with membership in AAUW, Antique Group, Sigma Xi, Drama Club, Senior Center, AARP, and was a charter member of Tomkins County Gem and Mineral Club. In addition to volunteer projects, she traveled across the U.S.A. and Europe with her last trip in France at the age of 89.Gladys was predeceased by her beloved younger brother, Gleason A.; and one nephew, James L. Sperling.She is survived by one niece, Barbara Conrad (Carl) of Buffalo; nephews, Nick Sperling of Portland, Maine, Mike Sperling (Dee) of Central Square; 11 grandnieces and nephews; nine great-grandnieces and nephews.A memorial service is scheduled Saturday, May 3, at 11 AM, at the Anabel Taylor Hall at Cornell University, with a gathering for Gladys' friends and family to follow in the Founder's Room.Arrangements are under the direction of the Herson Funeral Home, 110 South Geneva St., Ithaca, NY 14850.
