Merritt William Norton

- - 11/24/1985

It is with great sorrow that the family of Merritt Norton announce the passing of their beloved son, brother and uncle. Merritt died on 1/24/2018 from an apparent accidental overdose of prescribed medications. He is survived and will be forever cherished by his father Patrick Norton, mother Debbie Norton, sister Kathryn Norton (Dana) and nephew Wesley. He is also survived by extended family including uncles, aunts, cousins, his paternal grandfather and maternal grandmother who always referred to Merritt as "my precious boy". He will also be greatly missed by his cat 'Luna' who he cared for deeply.

Merritt touched many others with his loving hearth over the course of his 32 years of life. Countless friends and acquaintances have shared memories of Merritt as a kind, caring, compassionate and gentle person. A celebration of Merritt's life will be planned by his family. Memorial donations in honor of Merritt can made to local mental health or addiction recovery agencies.

Merritt and his dad Pat worked together on the prep and staining of our decks and other work. Both father and son worked patiently and were very caring towards each other. You taught me how to keep the weeds to a minimum in a stone patio using a putty knife. In my mind you are a great team even now! I still think about you Merritt every time I see my patio and decks. You are cherished and prayed for by many, more that you might know.

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of Merritt. I have nothing but great memories of him as his Physical Education teacher at Caroline. I always enjoyed the interactions I was able to have with him during PE classes as he was always fun loving, cheerful and polite young man.

I am so saddened by this news. I had not been in touch with Merritt for quite some time now, but I have extremely fond memories of growing up with him in Ithaca and sharing a lot of our elementary school days together. He was a wonderful guy and will be missed. Love to the Norton family during this time - my thoughts and prayers are with you all.

My heart breaks for you all. Merritt was a wonderful young man. I remember how involved he was in scouts and his family. You can see him in his nephew and I know how fiercely he was loved. There is nothing I can say but I love you and hope God can wrap his arms around you as you walk through this incredible loss.
