Steven Barbash Obituary

Barbash, Steven

Professor Steven Barbash touched so many lives in so many ways. He was an artist, teacher, mentor . . . a father, husband and grandfather . . . an entertaining storyteller, good friend and gracious host. An avid gardener and reader, he liked nothing better than sharing his canned specialties and signature soups with guests during his many unforgettable soirees. Steven loved people and people loved him, and he made the world a better place. Steven died at home in Lansing, NY, on August 17, 2016 after an extended illness. Born in New York City, he cherished family connections. Fun-loving, compassionate, and generous, he had an encyclopedic memory and knew how to share a good story. Steven earned his Master of Fine Arts degree from the School of Art and Architecture at Yale University and began his teaching career at Juniata College (PA) in 1960. Ten years later he joined the faculty at SUNY Cortland as a professor and as Chairman of the Art Department. He later retired as a University Distinguished Professor, after leaving behind a living legacy in the many students he influenced. He encouraged and guided his students to leverage their potential and achieve their goals. A resident of Ithaca for more than thirty years, Steven was drawn to the beauty of the gorges and natural wonders of this area. Naturally curious, and a seasoned traveler, Steven's trips to Europe, Africa, the Orient and Caribbean augmented his understanding of the world, which was reflected in his work. Steven had an appetite for life and lived it to the fullest. He was a "one man show" in every way - literally. His work was displayed worldwide, in both museums and galleries, including the Brooklyn Museum, Museum of Modern Art, and Whitney Museum (all in NYC), at the Jane Haslem Gallery, National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian and Library of Congress in Washington, DC, and at the Pushkin Museum in Moscow. His work was also exhibited in Pittsburgh, Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia and Houston. Steven is survived by his wife, Judy (Lohr) Barbash of Lansing, NY, a daughter, Laura Reid (Blake) of Trumansburg, NY, one grandson, Riley, two step-sons, Brandon Regard and Jarrett Regard (Valerie) and many nieces, nephews and cousins. A celebration honoring Steven's life will be held at the Treman Center in Ithaca, NY, at 3 PM, Sunday, September 4, 2016. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Assoc. at donatenow.heart.org.

So many things I would ask this man, my friend... so many.

Spring 1964 brings vital Juniata memories when Jack Gilbert and I knew Steve and Nancy well. Jack and I often talked of them; Jack thought Nancy a lovely, special woman. When Jack died, I found Steve and renewed, over the phone, our memories of that special spring. I'd love to hear from Nancy; I'm sending affection to her and her daughter. Sue

Thank you so much, Steven, for supporting and accepting me as an impetuous youth, for assuring me that the life of an artist is not only possible, but noble and admirable.

Goodbye Steve,
You were a generous, great guy and a superb artist. Since our student days together I have marveled at how your intricate, lovingly crafted prints and drawings embodied the universal spirit of the landscape. Given all the joking and bonhomie, you were also a spiritual being.

I remember his patience with me in an Art Studio course I took from him at Juniata in the mid 60's. He even let me help him pull the etchings he did for his daughter's birth announcements. We will all miss you Steven!

Mr. Barbash is a bright memory from my very long ago college days. Professor Barbash's course in Art History at Juniata college made me anxious to get out there and see some of the stuff he talked about for myself. He was a great teacher who was able to be a friend to his students. He won their respect and admiration for his ability and talent. He won their appreciation for the interest he took in them. It is a sad loss for his family and associates.

Steve is a person who I'll be missed. He was a genuine and talantd human being.

He was the one person who affected every student at Juniata College, because his course on the art and ideas of Western civilization was required, at 8 a.m.(!) for every first-year student. He influenced us all. There are still days when I refer back to that course, more than 50 years later, as a source of knowledge. He opened my mind to so many "old"
ideas that were new to me.

As a former Juniata student of Mr. Barbash, I offer my sincere sympathy to his family on their loss. His class on Great Epochs opened a world of art, music and travel to us, most of whom were from small towns and of modest means. This interest and excitement is still with us 54 years later.

I was one of Steven Barbash's students at Juniata College. It was because of him that I changed my major to English! He was charismatic, inspiring and made his classes come alive! My condolences to Nancy, family members and friends.

Mr. Bar bash opened up the world of art to me. His passion for art was contagious. I looked forward to his classes, which changed the way I observed art for the rest of my life.
