Susan Titus Obituary

Titus, Susan Booth

Susan Booth Titus passed away peacefully with Matthew Peterson at her side at HospiCare in Ithaca on Sunday, June 26, 2016 at the age of 76. She died after an incredibly brave seventeen year struggle against the breast cancer which finally took her. Her life partner for the last twenty years of her life was Matthew Peterson who continues to live at their home in the Town of Ithaca and wonder at his incredible good fortune to have known and loved her. While Susan never had children of her own she helped raise Leta and Ella Skalwold and loved them both dearly. Susan was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on June 23, 1940. Her parents were Robert Booth and Eleanor Boyle Booth. Susan has two sisters Linda Reichard and Barbara Schnabel who both still live in Pennsylvania. As a child in Pennsylvania Susan was a tomboy who loved running and playing among the trees. She always loved nature and began to draw and paint what she saw at a very early age. She was also inspired by the art of her mother who she loved throughout her entire life. Susan attended Saturday morning art classes at Carnegie Tech. After high school she took two years of art classes from 1958 through 1960 at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and graduated with a major in fashion illustration. She was then a fashion illustrator doing full page ads in the Pittsburgh Press for six years. Moving to New York she graduated from the State University of New York at Cortland majoring in etching. Susan continued her studies in etching at Cornell University and in 1982 and again in 1984 was was invited to attend the prestigious International Summer Academy For Fine Arts in Salzburg, Austria. Susan Titus was the winner of numerous competitive exhibitions and her artwork has been represented in galleries in the United States, Canada, Austria, Switzerland and the Netherlands. Susan sold her etchings and water colors in Ithaca, New York for thirty four years eventually expanding and opening the Titus Gallery on the Ithaca Commons where she sold antiques and jewelry as well as her art and the art of many local artists. It was an almost daily occurrence for customers to comment that the Titus Gallery was the most wonderful store in Ithaca. Susan was a much loved and widely collected artist. Susan had a profound love of nature and trees in particular for her entire life. She was also enormously concerned for wildlife and everything alive in the world. Many people have observed that Susan's life long love of nature is beautifully reflected in her art. Susan was deeply involved in the fight against hydrofracking in New York State and she gathered over 2,500 signatures in a valiant attempt to save the trees on the Commons before the recent transformation of the Ithaca Commons destroyed almost all of them. Susan Titus was also involved in so many progressive political causes that it would be impossible to list them. Susan had too many friends to even begin to mention and has been described again and again as one of the kindest, most compassionate and good people any of them have known. Susan was quietly buried at the Greensprings Natural Cemetery in Newfield, N.Y. on Wednesday, June 29, 2016 among the trees and forests she so loved as was her wish. There will be a private memorial service held for family and close friends this August. Please make any memorial contributions to one of the many wonderful organizations fighting breast cancer.

Beloved artist, sweetheart and best friend. One chapter ends and another begins. A little girl is playing among the trees once again for the stories are unending in the infinite forest.

Susan's art has moved e always, clear, direct, intimate, accomplished. She would not mind I think to be known by her art. I did meet her once and saw her of course around the Commons. She had such presence.

I fell in love with Cornfield in the 90s. I bought twice for very special gifts and will buy it now again if I can, for me, for always. The three willows lives in my mind, their beauty captured as noone else could. My condolences to all who knew her. A great woman and a great artist has passed.

So sorry to learn this news. Susan was always so kind to my young son when we went into the Gallery. She patiently answered his questions, let him look at gemstones, and encouraged his interest in art. My heart goes out to her loved ones.

Dear Matt, Leta, and Ella, and all of those who love this gentle, artistically gifted woman,

I am so sorry for your loss and heartache. I am saddened to hear of her passing. I hope that you will be comforted by special memories, your own personal belief system, and the support of other loved ones.

Whenever we interacted at GreenStar, I felt her to be a lovely and warm, kind, gentle spirit. I know you will miss her dearly.

Sincerely, and with love and caring, Lisa S. from GS, and formerly of GIAC

Wow. I'm so sorry Susan died. Oh my. I've known her for at least 35 years and we were always friends, though we might not see each other for extended periods. She often would share with me the latest environmental outrage. I love her art. I took a big print of her snowy cornfield as a gift to my niece's Rotary Exchange host family in Ecuador years ago and they loved it. Susan and I were always glad to see each other and greeted each other with warmth. This winter she told me she'd be closing the store, but I did not realize the real reason. What a loss. What a life!
Susan, you were an inspiration, with your love of nature and beauty and your passion for protecting our Earth and its living things. You've left us all with such exquisite after images of your visions of our landscape. Thank you so much for what you've given us. Through your art you have helped us see our land and its beauty with greater heart and love. We love you and miss you, love you and miss you....

Much love and support to all of Susan's many friends and family. I'm sitting below one of Susan's iris paintings as I write this remembering the special love and support she showed me many years ago. So sad to learn of her passing.

An artist is fortunate to leave behind tangible, as well as intangible, memories. Her print of the willows at Stewart Park hangs in my dining room, so every day I have a reminder of Susan's talent and love for nature.

My heart is feeling such a loss for the community.
I regret I didn't followup on that massage I was going to give you, Susan. May your spirit fly you to a blissful place in the sky.
You will be missed.

I am sitting in my kitchen looking at a print of Susan's pumpkin patch painting. In my brother's house in Chicago hang several of Susan's Finger Lakes landscapes. She helped define what it meant to live in this glorious region during this period of time. How wonderful that she lives on in her beautiful artwork.

Barbara and I extend our most sincere condolences to family and friends.

The Titus Gallery was a regular stop for me as I walked the Commons nearly every day. I delighted spending time with Susan as she used me as a sounding board for her very legitimate complaints about government and the state of our society. She had a certain beautiful innocence about her that brought reality into sharp definition.

Susan enriched our lives through her art, her inquisitiveness and her friendship.

The two Susan Titus paintings that hang on our wall here in Gloucester will remind us every day of both the joy of sharing some time with her and our loss at her passing.

I send my deepest condolences to Matt and Susan:s family and Friends. She was indeed a special person and a gem in our community. Her art was spectacular and her gallery was extradinary, like going to a museum. It is loss for the ithaca commons! The obituary spells it out perfectly. She did love trees and wanted to save the Ithaca commons tress! and cared about many causes. We would talk about them when I stoped by the gallery to see her. She fought very bravely against her illness. I kept telling Susan to have a book made of her artwork. She was Ithaca's artist and we loved her. May she rest in peace and may those closest to her be comforted by memories, her art and the love from our community who will miss her dearly.
