Ithaca: Vivian Elizabeth Herring, 99, passed away peacefully at her senior living residence at Sterling House in Ithaca, NY. on April 12, 2011. She was born in New York City on February 13, 1912, daughter of Fredrick W. and Harriet Amos Herring. She attended Hudson River High School in Hastings-on-Hudson, NY, and then graduated from Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY in 1938 with a Certificate in Dietary and Institutional Management. She worked at the Baldwin School, Bryn Mawr, PA until 1946 when she accepted a position in Housing and Dining Services at Cornell University. She continued her career at Cornell until her retirement in 1975. Vivian was a very loving and independent woman who found great pleasure spending time with family and friends. She enjoyed local theater and music, and was especially active in golf and bowling circles. She is survived by her immediate family: Judy Newton and her husband Carl of Jericho, VT and their children Derek and Kendra; Christine Perry of Rochester, NY and her children Alice, Martin, and Mathew; Martha Haggerty of Syracuse NY; and Gail Lovelace of Monument, CO. Her extended family includes Leslee and Dan Adriano; and Linda Cushman and her daughters Mariah and Shane. In addition she leaves behind a very dear and special friend Ann Ward. The family expresses thanks to all the wonderful people at Sterling House for their extraordinary care, friendship and support; with very special love and affection for Vivian's "girls". There will be a celebration of Vivian's life at a later date to be determined.
