James Cauthen Obituary

Mr. James Hazel Cauthen, 95, died Sunday, March 1, 2015.
He was born Nov. 29, 1919, in Lancaster, the son of the late James Brumette Cauthen and Maebelle Fleming Cauthen. He was married to Rosemary Culp Cauthen and the late Loretta Harper Cauthen.
Mr. Cauthen was a resident of Heath Springs Residential Care where he was known as the "Cookie Man."
He did construction work and was employed at Dupont in Camden. He retired from Westvaco in North Charleston after 23 years of service and held the office of secretary/treasurer of Local 508. He was a lifetime member of Jackson Masonic Lodge No. 53 and a loyal Carolina Gamecock fan. He was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church where he served in many capacities and served our country in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II in the Pacific.
Mr. Cauthen is survived by his wife, Rosemary Culp Cauthen; two daughters, Gerri C. Trabookis and her husband, Chris, of Greenville, and Roberta C. Blackmon of Lancaster; a stepson, Andy Harper and his wife, Suzanne, of Lancaster; a stepdaughter, Joy Gunter and her husband, Allen, of Columbia; seven grandchildren, Jay Blackmon, Kelly Outlaw, Drew Trabookis, Zach Trabookis, Brad Trabookis, Carmen Thomas and Allen Gunter Jr.; 10 great-grandchildren, Cass and Noah Outlaw, Taylor, Courtney and Cy Blackmon, Jacob and Jeremiah Barrett, Ariana Trabookis, Zachary and Henry Thomas; and three sisters, Inez C. McCorkle, Sara C. Williams and Louise C. Gardner, all of Lancaster.
Mr. Cauthen was preceded in death by two brothers, Odell Cauthen and Clarence Cauthen; a sister, Margaret C. Beckham; and a grandson, Bill Harper.
The celebration of life funeral service for Mr. Cauthen is 3 p.m. today, March 4, at St. Luke United Methodist Church by the Rev. Bill McCown. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family would like to thank all of the caregivers of Heath Springs Residential Care for their loving care during his stay there.
The family will receive friends following the service and suggest memorial contributions be made to St. Luke United Methodist Church Building Fund, 128 Providence Road, Lancaster, SC 29720.

My sympathy to Hazel's family. I worked with him at Westvaco in Charleston. He was a competent, honest,dependable,Outside Machinist. He was an easy-going, well respected man. Hazel was truly the "salt of the earth", and I'll never forget him. Family be proud........
