My cousin Dale. Kind - always kind. Always a gentleman - a gentle man.
When he was little, he and my brother, Harry, and Alex Schubert played across the three connecting back yards. They dug a swimming pool - almost. They built an airplane out of 2X4's that almost flew. They loved cars and engines, anything mechanical. In college, Dale had so many friends and was always doing fun things. He fell so in love with Gerda Ladd, and was so proud of his baby girls. Claire and Rose, you both look so much like your Dad. It was wonderful to watch him grow in grace and dignity and marvel at his constant sweetness and thoughtfulness.
I will miss him so much.
Gerda, Claire and Rose, my love is with you. Eventually, we will dry our tears,
but Dale will always be with us all. I am so grateful that he was in my life.

I had the pleasure of meeting Dale in 1971 and he has been was a great friend and fraterity brother ever since. His big smile and tailgate enthusiasm will be missed by many! He's one of the few Pike Brothers that actually made the effort to keep up with so many of us that were scattered all over the country. He was the driving force to keep so many of us coming back to Knoxville for just one more tailgate. All his family and friends are in my prayers.

Dear Gerda and Dan, my thoughts are especially with you and your wonderful family at this time of great loss, because I do know what you are going through, having personally experienced the deep loss of my husband and more recently of my son Allen.
Both left holes in my heart with love I'll never forget.
Dale and Allen were friends from birth, 3 months apart, just as Dan and Laurance were lifetime friends, as were their parents. Dale was born with a shock of black hair; Allen, a redhead, was born with teeth and less hair. For Christmas Dan gave Laurance a toothbrush for his son; Laurance gave Dan a hairbrush. They all had a good sense of humor and fun together.
Greta, I attended your beautiful wedding to Dale in Clarksville and have loved you ever since. It was a treat for me to talk with Lovely Claire and Rose at the receptions. Also, I saw Sam and his two pretty daughters, Alice and Molly with Kathy. Lisa was personable and more beautiful than ever and chatted with my daughter Lynn, her childhood friend.! Your mother and I talked about your wedding weekend, which was fun for everyone. Dick and Jean Bowen drove me to Clarksville.
I was sorry to miss being with Dan, Claxton, and Josephine, who had to leave early.
You and Dale were an outstanding and handsome couple, meaning so much to your church, your family and friends,
and to the entire area, including Elkmont, where we spend many wonderful weekends together--even when we commuted from Lookout Mountain for ten years.
Please know that you have my deepest sympathy and always my love.

For the entire Mayo family, I was so saddened to learn of Dale's death. I knew him through my father L.A.Dick who worked at Mayo's for many years and thought so much of Dale. At my father's death Dale wrote the kindest letter to our family and we will always remember it. My mother is Maxine Dick and brother Al who also share in your sadness. Please extend our sympathies to Mr. Dan also. God's love and care be with you and surround you at this sad time. Sincerely, Janie Dick Pearson

Gerda,Clair,Rose,
I was deeply saddened to hear of Dale's passing. Gerda you may not remember me but I was Dale's receptionist about the time the two of you were married. I was only 19 years old and Dale treated me as if I were his little sister. When my grandfather passed away Dale came and paid his respects. When I was having a difficult time he reminded me of God's love for me and told me to stay stong. I have never forgotten the kindness he showed to me. I ran into Dale a few years ago and he told me all about Claire and Rose; he was so very proud of the two of them. His love for Christ and the three of you touched me deeply. I will lift you up in my prayers and ask God to bless you in the days ahead.

I was saddened to hear of Dale's passing. He and I have been casual friends since our days together at Sequoyah Hills Elementary School, through Webb School and at UT. At UT Dale and I were fraternity brothers in Pi Kappa Alpha for four years. I always marveled at Dale's ability to fix just about any engine ever made. Dale was in charge of the old Pi Kappa Alpha fire truck during our time together. He always managed to keep it running during football season so that we could all jump on and ride up Cumberland Avenue yelling "Go big orange" on the way to Neyland Stadium. When the truck broke down he would somehow find the replacement parts from around the country to fix it. Dale and I were also in the Men's Cotillion. I recall the Annual Party one year when Dale showed up in a tuxedo and black basketball shoes to amuse everyone. Although I didn't see Dale often after I left Knoxville, I always welcomed his smile and his hello when I saw him a Sunday brunch at Cherokee Country Club. God bless you my friend. In the spirit of phi phi KA, you will be missed
