LAKELAND - Everitt Jones was born December 19, 1925, the third son of Artis and Susie (Horne) Jones in Dunedin, Florida. He died March 23, 2014, in Lakeland, Florida from heart failure.
April 10, 1944, Everitt enlisted in the United States Navy. He served in the Pacific on the aircraft carrier, USS San Jacinto during seven major operations. He was awarded the Navy Presidential Unit Citation with Star, 7 Campaign Ribbons, 2 Philippine Government Ribbons and 10 Combat Stars. In 1946 Everitt was privileged to participate in the atomic bomb expedition (Crossroads) at Bikini Atoll aboard the USS Shangri La.
After returning from World War II he attended Florida Southern College in Lakeland, Florida. His lifetime career was spent with American Cyanamid Phosphate Company, He was General Mine Supt. when he retired in 1981. Later Mr. Jones was employed as Mine Manager for Farmland industries and retired in 1987.
July 31, 1950 Everitt Jones and Sylvia Thomason were united in marriage in Lakeland, Florida. To this union were born two sons: John and Joseph Jones and two daughters: Julie Jones and Janice Summerlin. Sylvia Jones died of cancer December 28, 1995.
Everitt Jones married Elizabeth Kruger on July 9, 1997.
He was a member of Lake Gibson Church of the Nazarene in Lakeland, Florida.
Mr. Jones was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Sylvia; his son, Joseph Jones; his two brothers, Willard Jones and Cecil Jones and a favorite niece, Mary Grey.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; his son, John Jones; his daughters: Julie Jones and Janice Summerlin of Lakeland, FL, two stepchildren, Gary Kruger of Herman, NE and Gayle Hansen, Greencastle, IN, seven grandchildren, Seth and Noah Jones, Griffin and Sylvia Summerlin, Ethan Kruger, Beth Ann and Kelly Hansen, Gabriel Gibbs, several nieces and nephews and many friends.
Memorial Services will be held at Lake Gibson Church of the Nazarene, Lakeland, FL. on Saturday, March 29 at 10:30 AM. Visitation will be at 9:30 AM at the church.
In lieu of flowers gifts may be given to the building of the Family Life Center at the church or the charity of your choice.
Internment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.
