MAXFIELD, 80

LAKELAND - James Robert "Jim" Maxfield died June 13, 2014, after a struggle with cancer.
He was born in Paducah, Kentucky, November 27, 1933. His parents were Robert Glenn Maxfield and Catherine Cumi Pryor. He graduated from Kentucky Wesleyan College and Duke Divinity School. After serving churches in the Louisville Conference, he joined the staff of the National Division of the Board of Global Ministries. He started and assisted with numerous new churches across the country and in Florida. In 1974 he with his family transferred to Florida where he was the founding pastor of Cypress Lake United Methodist Church in Fort Myers. He has served several churches in Florida. In 1989 he became the Executive Director of the Florida. United Methodist Foundation and Development Fund. In 1992 he was appointed District Superintendent of the St. Petersburg District. After serving the six years there, he retired to Lakeland. He became an interim District Superintendent in the former Lakeland District during the change to fewer districts.
He has been married 46 years to Janice Kay Weber of Cincinnati. They have one daughter, Amy Rose and her husband Wade Shetler of Clearwater, Florida. Jim was the eldest of six. His sisters are Eileen Chesnut and her husband Kenneth of Smithland, Kentucky and Virginia Savage and her husband Robert of La Center, Kentucky. His brother is Richard Maxfield and his wife Bernadine of Marion, Kentucky. His brother, Kenneth and sister, Barbara Warren are predeceased. He has numerous nieces and nephews.
A service will be held at Lakeland First United Methodist Church on Friday, June 20 at 11:00 a.m.

Jim was always a cheerful friend, a sympathetic listener, and a wise and dedicated minister. We so enjoyed our time in Book Discussion Group, at church events and Retired Clergy Gatherings. Jim is greatly missed and always appreciated.
