LAKELAND - Maurice H. Sigler passed away Saturday (Dec. 5, 2009) of natural causes.
He was born in Missouri Valley, Iowa on July 3, 1909 and was raised in Iowa and South Dakota. He graduated from high school in Modale, Iowa in 1927 and attended South Dakota State College in Brookings. He married Francys Gentry Scott, September 2, 1933. She preceded him in death in 1991. In 1993, he married Anne Nock.
Mr. Sigler began work in The Federal Bureau of Prisons in 1939. He served in the United States Navy 1943-1945. He was Warden of the State Penitentiary at Angola LA from 1952-1958. In 1959, he became Warden of the State Penitentiary in Lincoln, NE and Director of the first Department of Corrections in Nebraska in 1967.
Mr. Sigler was appointed to the United States Parole Commission in Washington, D.C., in 1971 and served as Chairman 1972-1976. He moved to Lakeland after retirement. As a member of the American Correctional Association for many years, he was President 1971-1972. He received the E.R. Cass award for outstanding service from ACA in 1974.
Corrections Corporation of America, the first private company to design, build and manager secure prisons was formed in 1983 and Mr. Sigler was on the first Board of Directors and Chairman of the first Advisory Board.
As a charter member of the North Lakeland Presbyterian Church, Mr. Sigler was active for many years and served as an elder, usher, greeter, and on several committees including the Building Committee for the new sanctuary which opened in December of 2003. He was a regular member of Sunday School and a Men's Bible Study which he attended up until the last.
He is survived by three stepchildren, Laurie K. Nelson of Spokane, WA., Jamie C. Nock of Lawrenceville, GA. and Robin N. Windsor of Lakeland and four grandchildren. He is also survived by four nephews, Richard Less of Battle Lake, MN., Larry D. Sigler of Sierra Vista, AZ., Ramee Wicker and Ron Higgins of Houstonia, MO. and a niece Sharon Jackson of El Mariage, AZ.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to North Lakeland Presbyterian Church.

Maurie was a unique individual -- a true gentleman who in his career in prison administration had seen the worst of the worst. He loved being helpful in any capacity where he could serve. He was always thoughtful and caring. It was a privilege to have known him. I appreciated all the advice and assistance he gave to me.
