LAKE WALES - Merrill H. Douglas, 85, of Lake Wales, FL, & Hamden, CT, passed away on Sunday, January 25th, 2015, surrounded by his loving family. He was born February 24, 1929, in New Haven, CT, to the late George and Natalie Douglas.
Merrill was the president of the George M. Douglas Co. since he was 25, and currently the CEO of the Sanford Street Mini Warehouse in Hamden, CT. He was a member of the New Haven Lions Club for over 50 years, on the Board of Indian Lake Estates where he was in charge of the golf course, president of the Key Club and Commodore of the ILE Yacht Club. He also worked on the social committee and security department of ILE.
Merrill was an avid golfer for over 50 years; first at the New Haven Country Club then at the Lake Wales Country Club. Throughout his golfing career he was very proud to have achieved 5 Holes in One. His joyful nature and competitive spirit will be greatly missed by all on the course.
Merrill was preceded in death by his sister, Georgia Blaski and his brother, Kenneth Douglas. He is survived by his loving wife, Claire and his 6 children: sons, Merrill William (Kathy) Douglas, George Holmes, daughters, Cindy (Mike) Conner, Cheryl Ann (Vincent) Gogliettino, Paula Douglas and Gayle (Andy) Koutroumanis, sister-in-law, Aloyse Holman, 11 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and his former wife, Dorothy Douglas. His children and grandchildren meant the world to him and he will be greatly missed by all of them.
A celebration of Merrill's life will be held at Lake Wales Country Club at 2:00 on January 31st. A memorial service and interment will take place at a later date in North Haven, CT, at the family plot.
