Linda Elliott Tingen, 78, of Oxford passed away Wednesday, November 12, 2025, at Granville Medical Center after an extended period of declining health.
Born on December 24, 1946, in Granville County, she was the daughter of the late Bailey William Elliott and Malissa Vaughan Elliott.
Linda graduated from J.F. Webb High School in 1964 and, upon her graduation from Fuller's Business School, she began her career at Granville Insurance Company in Oxford. She later went to work with the Granville County School System before eventually accepting employment with the State of North Carolina where she would then work until she retired from Central Regional Hospital in 2003. She later returned to work part time until becoming fully retired in 2015.
Linda loved serving her church, Hester Baptist, and served as an administrative assistant for seven years until 1978 and then as financial secretary from 2017 until just recently when her health would not allow her to continue serving.
She enjoyed attending lunch gatherings with friends and previous co-workers, spending time in the yard, including riding the lawn mower, which she found to be therapeutic. She loved and had a passion for travel and was especially proud of having traveled to all fifty states in the US, as well as international travel to Canada, Germany, Austria, France, and Switzerland, and a mission trip to Honduras. She was crazy about Duke basketball and rarely missed watching their games and was truly in sports heaven watching in person as they won the national championship in Minneapolis in 1992. Linda also dearly loved her four grandchildren and cherished any time that she was able to spend with them.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, November 16, 2025, at 2:00pm at Hester Baptist Church in Oxford to be officiated by Dr. Jeff Hensley and Dr. Randy Bridges. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall.
She is survived by her husband of sixty years, James Tingen; two sons, Michael Tingen (Beth) of Durham, NC and Jeff Tingen (Bonita) of Oxford; four grandchildren, Olivia, Reagan, Ellie and Ethan Tingen; two nephews, Wayne Breedlove (Judy) of Butner, NC, and Dwight Owen (Marianne) of Sioux City, Iowa, and a brother-in-law, Grant Gardner of Walker, Iowa. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Foy Breedlove, Margaret Cole, and Mae Gardner; a brother, Russell Elliott; and a niece, Diane Keith.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Hester Baptist Church, 6581 NC-96, Oxford, NC, 27565.
