Philip Montague Godwin

Philip Montague Godwin, 76, died peacefully on January 8, 2026, under the care of Heroes Way Hospice at the Durham VA Medical Center. Born on September 19, 1949, in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, Phil was the son of the late Rev. Clarence Edwin Godwin, Sr, and Bettie Montague Godwin, and a 1967 graduate of J.F. Webb High School. Phil was a resident of the Durham Regent retirement community, where he made many friends and was known for his warm presence and easy camaraderie. He is survived by his brothers, Clarence Edwin Godwin, Jr. (Melanie) of High Point, Dowell Levy Godwin (Mary Ann) of Durham, and his sister, Haven Godwin Parrott (Mike) of Oxford. A proud veteran, Phil served his country in both the United States Marine Corps and the United States Navy. Following his military service, he built a long and respected career as an electronics technician, working with AT&T, Nortel, and GE Aviation. Phil was a wonderful brother, uncle, and friend. His bright smile could light up a room and his quick, dry wit often left us doubled over with laughter. Phil had a gift for making people feel truly welcome. Simply put, Phil was everyone's friend.
