CELIA GUERRERO Obituary

CELIA M. GUERRERO
Celia M. Guerrero, lovingly known as "Chela", passed away Saturday afternoon in Corpus Christi, TX. She was 91. Born on September 13, 1920 in Rio Grande City, Texas, she was the daughter of the late Vicente Guerrero and Maria Margarita Margo Guerrero. She attended Immaculate Conception School in Rio Grande City and graduated from Our Lady of the Lake High School in San Antonio, TX. Upon graduation, she enrolled at the University of Texas where she acquired a degree in business.
She returned to Rio Grande City and taught business classes for 10 years. Over the summer, she re-enrolled at the University of Texas where, after three summers, she received her Master's degree in library science. She then became the Rio Grande City High School librarian; a position she maintained for 30 years, retiring in 1990. In the fall of 1990 she was invited to set up the library at the new John and Olive Hinojosa Elementary School. She continued to volunteer there until the end of September. In November 1991 she started temporary work at the Starr County Public Library where she remained until the end of June 1992. A dedicated and committed educator, Chela was a pillar of Rio Grande City's scholastic community and strongly encouraged higher education.
Chela spent many summers traveling the world. She toured China , Australia , Europe, and the Holy Land just to name a few. She was also an avid supporter of the University of Texas.
Before leaving Rio Grande City, Chela was an active member of Immaculate Conception Church; she taught CCD and bible classes and served on the Parish Council. She was also a member of the Los Garcias prayer group, the Starr County Historical Society and a H.O.S.T. volunteer at Ringgold Intermediate School.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers Hector S. Guerrero, Elias J. (Adela) Guerrero, Sr., and Joel (Leah) Guerrero.
She is survived by her brother Raul R. (Carmen) Guerrero of McAllen, TX and her sister Rosaura G. Garcia (the late Dr. J.A. Garcia) of Alice, TX.

We all have fond memories of Miss Chela. She was our neighbor, our librarian, and a beautiful person to have in our lives as we were growing up. Greetings and our deepest sympathy to the Guerrero family from Clarissa, Madia, and Mariceli (Gonzalez).

We'll miss you Chel. Not a day would go by that Chela would make her daily
visit to Margo Pharmacy. The Guerrero homestead was across the alley from
the store. She'd come sometimes before school, but usually after work to visit and or pick up merchandise. Chela was one on the few people besides
the employees that knew how to enter the back door in the alley.
It was my sophomore year in High School, that I took a typing class with
Miss Guerrero. She was very strict, but very fair with all the students.
Some of us were not as fast as most, but NOT making mistakes is what she stressed.
May you rest in piece my cousin.
