Billy Griffin Obituary

BILLY (BILL) BRUCE GRIFFIN
Billy (Bill) Bruce Griffin, 77, went peacefully to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Monday, May 25, 2009.
He leaves his loving wife of 56 years, Darlene Lois (Roberts) Griffin; his daughter, Danette Hubbs and son-in-law Lonnie Hubbs; his three granddaughters Sonya Jefferson and husband Jason, Amy Stauffacher and Mara Stauffacher, and many close friends. He was preceded in death by his daughter Denese DeWitt and brothers Nummi (Pete) and Kenneth Griffin.
Bill was born on August 17, 1931. He grew up in Rural Hall, North Carolina, the middle son of Walter and Margie Griffin.
In his early years, Bill worked on the family's tobacco farm in North Carolina. As a young adult, he joined the U.S. Army where he was a Corporal. Bill is a veteran of the Korean War, where he was wounded in combat in two separate incidents. He earned a Korean Service Medal and five Bronze Stars. He met his wife, Darlene, while they were both stationed at Camp Cooke, Santa Maria, California. Bill married his sweetheart, Darlene June 21, 1952, in Santa Maria, California.
After serving with the U.S. Army, Bill and Darlene moved to the Midwest where they settled in Cedar Falls, Iowa and raised their family. There, Bill began his career in community service, first as a Police Officer in Cedar Falls then as the city's Street Commissioner. During the last years of his career, he worked for Blackhawk County Highway Department as the County Roads Superintendent. He not only took pride in his work over the years, but truly relished the friends he made throughout his career. Bill retired in 1996 and moved to Texas, where he and Darlene made their home in Weslaco in the Rio Grande Valley.
Bill had a passion for fishing. He and Darlene spent countless years fishing and having fun together. He not only loved the sport, he was an expert fisherman. He shared his love and knowledge of fishing with family and many, many friends over the years. Bill's other passion was people. He knew no strangers. He always helped those less fortunate than himself and did so with much love.
A memorial service for Bill will be held at the Rio Valley Estates Friendship Hall in Weslaco at 2:00 on Friday, May 29, 2009. Condolences may be sent to Darelen Griffin in care of Lonnie and Danette Hubbs at 1652 Rio Valley Dr., Clive, IA 50325.
Arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home in Harlingen, Texas.

Our hearts go out to you at this time and in the days ahead. Remember Bill is now dancing on the dock while catching fish. Dar we will still get our dance just a bit later. Please let us know if there is anything that we can do.
