McAllen - Boone Slusher passed away peacefully on January 13, 2023 at home with a smile on his face surrounded by his family. He was 82 years old. Boone was born on June 8, 1940 in Pineville, Kentucky to Mat G. and Mayme Slusher. The family came to Texas in 1955 when Boone was a sophomore in high school. He quickly assimilated with his classmates at McHi and created lifelong friendships. Boone loved his high school years especially being a member of the Bulldog football team on which he was captain of during his senior year. Thereafter, Boone was offered a full scholarship to Texas A&I University where he was a member of the 1959 NAIA National Championship football team coached by the legendary Gil Steinke. After a shoulder injury his sophomore year he transferred to Pan American University where he received his accounting degree and passed his C.P.A. exam. More importantly, this is where Boone started dating and fell in love with his longtime friend Shirley Tarbutton.
Boone continued his studies at the University of Texas Law School where he received his law degree in 1966. Upon finishing his law degree, Boone and Shirley were married in November of 1966 and settled in McAllen where he embarked on his legal career. After practicing law for several years with Howard Stafford, Boone joined the firm of Ewers and Toothaker where he was a partner until 1979. For the next 20 years, he partnered with his friend Tom Wilkins in the firm Wilkins & Slusher. Finally, after a brief solo practice career, he joined his son Chan in the firm Slusher & Associates, where they have practiced law together for the last 24 years.
Boone was one of the first Board Certified Attorneys in the State of Texas. He was universally known among his fellow attorneys as a lawyer with the highest principles who was true to his word, and kind to all he dealt with.
During Boone's long distinguished career, he spent many hours serving his community. As a young lawyer, he was a member of the Texas State Junior Bar Board of Directors. He was an active member of the McAllen Greeters and McAllen Jaycees for 25 years. In addition, he served as President of the McAllen Boys Club and the McAllen Chamber of Commerce.
In addition to his community service, Boone was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church and enjoyed teaching 5th grade Sunday School for over ten years. However, If you ask Boone, his most proud achievement may have been as coach for both of his son's Boy's Club Football teams. He coached with Charlie Henson for seven years and only lost two games.
Boone's most favorite pastime was deer hunting in South Texas. Along with his long-time hunting buddies, Billy Reynolds, Bob Perry, and Glenn Jarvis, they hunted together for over 20 years. During those years, he was able to take his sons out to the lease and spent some of the best moments of his life sharing his passion for the South Texas Brush country and hunting for the big buck.
Finally, the light of his life in his later years was his grandchildren. The times spent at his place at the arroyo fishing with his grandkids were his favorite. His love for them was immeasurable.
