Gilberto Perez Obituary

Roma - Gilberto Pérez, Jr., beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother passed away peacefully on October 8, 2022, in Pharr, Texas. He is survived by his wife of 55 years Elda G. Perez, his children Leticia Laura Perez and Gilberto Perez III (Ma. Teresa), as well as seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and his brothers Alfonso H. Perez (Elia), Jorge Perez (Dilia), and Arturo S. Perez (Velma). He was preceded in death by his parents, Gilberto Pérez and Felicidad Ramirez de Pérez, and his sister Maria Felicidad Hinojosa. Gilberto was 91 years old.

Gilberto was born on August 16, 1931 to Gilberto Pérez and Felicidad Ramirez de Pérez in Roma, Texas. He attended the Roma schools to the eleventh grade and transferred to Rio Grande City High School where he graduated in 1949.

He attended the University of Texas at Austin majoring in Civil Engineering. Being part of the University of Texas U.S. Air Force ROTC he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. Upon being Honorably discharged, he returned home to manage the family business, C.O.D. Food Store, from 1952 to 1995.

He served as Grand Knight of the Roma Council of the Knights of Columbus, Father Clos Council 3367, he was a life member. He became a Fourth Degree Knight in 1967. He and his wife are members of Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church in Roma, Texas.

Gilberto served seven years as a trustee for the Starr County Memorial Hospital District. He was also a member of the Texas Constitution Revision Commission in 1973.

Mr. Gilberto Pérez Jr. was a kind and gentle person who loved spending time with family. He was committed to family, ensuring that all knew of support to achieve their highest potential.

His children, grandchildren & great grandchildren were the pride and joy of his life. The legacy of Gilberto's kind spirit, his pride for The University of Texas at Austin, his love of telling stories and jokes, and going to the Ranch to spend time with family, especially during Easter, will live on through his friends and family.

The Pérez Family wishes to thank all who expressed love and affection with their presence, words of comfort, prayers, and flowers. To the ladies of The Court Oblates of Mary immaculate No.1978, Catholic Daughters of the Americas for leading the Rosary, the Roma Council of the Knights of Columbus Clos Council 3367, the Roma VFW 9175 who will be conducting Military Funeral Honors, and to Father Pablo Wilhem for officiating. There are no words to describe our gratitude to Gardens at Brook Ridge Memory Care Unit for the support, care and attention they provided to our beloved one.

Funeral services will be provided by Sanchez Memorial Funeral Home (101 AR Sanchez Sr. Dr. Roma, Texas). Visitation will be Saturday, October 15, 2022, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm with the Rosary at 12:00 pm. Mass service will be at 2:30 pm Saturday, October 15, 2022, at Our Lady of Refuge Church (4 S. Eugene de Mazenod Avenue, Roma, TX 78584), with burial to follow at City of Roma Cemetery (US Hwy 83 and FM 649, Roma, TX). Pallbearers will be Rafael Barrera III, Michael Ramirez, Alfonso H. Pérez Jr., David Perez, Jorge Alfredo Gomez, and Javier L. Gomez.
