HECTOR FARIAS Obituary

HECTOR FARIAS SR.
WESLACO - Hector Farias Sr., 84, passed away September 29, 2010 at his son's residence in Weslaco. A well known and respected businessman, and former Mayor of Weslaco, was born in Mission, Tx on October 20, 1925 and spent most of his married life residing in Weslaco. His various credits included having been Commissioner for the City of Weslaco from 1974-1981 at which point he was elected Mayor in 1981 serving until 1987. Hector was a member of the Weslaco EDC Board from 1999-2004 and served as President from 2001-2004. He also served on the Weslaco Admission Housing Authority and was a longtime member of the Weslaco Lions Club.
On September 6, 2002, he was appointed by Gov. Rick Perry to the Texas State Veteran's Commission where he served as Secretary until the end of 2007. He was a Past Commander of the Catholic War Veterans and served as State Adjutant General. Hector also served on the RGV Economic Development Committee, the Weslaco Airport Committee, the Weslaco Bicultural Museum as well as the East Hidalgo County Republican Party as Vice Chair. He was also selected as the Weslaco Chamber Man of the Year in 2005.
He answered the call of his country and served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and remained in the Texas State Guard where he obtained the rank of 1st Lieutenant.
Hector was best known in the business world as manager of the Sherwin Williams Paint Co. for 32 years both in Weslaco and McAllen before retiring in 1991. He was presently owner/manager of H&F Repair Co. servicing the airless spray paint equipment. Hector attended college at Pan Am University in Edinburg as well as the United States Armed Forces.
Survivors include his loving wife of 63 years, Laurencia V. Farias; a son, Hector (Letha) Farias Jr.; grandchildren, Hector Farias III, David Farias and Kassandra Farias; and a great granddaughter, Persephone Farias.
Visitation will be held today,Sunday, October 3, 2010 from 4pm to 9pm with a rosary held at 7pm at McCaleb Funeral Home Chapel in Weslaco. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, October 4, 2010 at 10:00 am at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Weslaco. Interment will follow at RGV State Veteran's Cemetery in Mission. Serving as pallbearers will be Hector Farias III, David Farias, Kassandra Farias, Hollis V. Rutledge, Joseph Hess and Julian Adame. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Manuel Farias Jr., Hollis Rutledge III, Ryan Patrick Rutledge, Hilda Adame, Joe Sanchez, Pablo Pena, Hernan Gonzalez and Anthony Covacevich.
Arrangements are under the direction of McCaleb Funeral Home of Weslaco.

We will remember Mayor Farias for his integrity and dedication to the City of Weslaco and to those who served their country. He was never too busy to assist someone needing help. His passing is a loss to our community, but he will be fondly remembered. May his family be comforted in knowing that he was held in such high esteem, and may they receive the peace that only God can give.
