REV. JOHN W. SHANKS
EDINBURG – Rev. John W. Shanks, 76, entered eternal rest on Monday, August 30, 2010, at his residence in Edinburg.
Born in Matanzas, Cuba and formerly of Alice, Texas, Mr. Shanks had lived in Edinburg for three years. He was a pastor with the United Methodist Church of the Rio Grande Conference from 1968 to 1996. Before that John was a pastor in Cuba 6 ½ years with the Methodist Church. During this time he made arrangements to come to the United States via Spain. The family lived seven months in Spain before coming to the US. John, his wife Caridad and two children David and Leora arrived in the US in 1967. Their third child, Margarita, was born in Oklahoma in 1968, where they lived with the missionary Rev. Leora Shanks for seven months. He began his pastorate with the Rio Grande Conference in 1968.
He is preceded in death by his father, Pastor Porras, his mother, Petronila Blanco and adopted mother, Rev. Leora Shanks.
Mr. Shanks is survived by wife, Caridad Shanks of Edinburg; a son, David Shanks of Garland, Texas; two daughters, Leora Shanks of Edinburg and Margarita Shanks (Timothy) Bennett of Garland, Texas; two granddaughters, Emma Shanks and Angelina Carrie Bennett; two sisters, Maria Gonzalez and Delia Margarita Gonzalez; and a bother, Juan Bautista Porras.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. today, September 1, 2010, at El Buen Pastor United Methodist Church, in Edinburg. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, September 2, 2010, at El Buen Pastor United Methodist Church, 705 E. University in Edinburg. Cremation will follow at Val Verde Memorial Gardens in Donna.
Funeral services are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in Edinburg.
