She graduated from Edinburg (TX) High School 1953, where she was a cheerleader, senior class secretary, honor society member, and Sophomore Beauty. She was the piano accompanist for the choral groups.

She attended Pan American College for two years, and then transferred to Southwestern University, graduating with a degree in music education in 1957. She was a member of honor societies at both schools. At Southwestern, she sang the title role in "Amahl and the Night Visitors." She was chosen Independent Beauty in 1956.

Marjorie married Robert W. Sledge in Edinburg on August 14, 1956.They were married for 66 years at the time of her death. The couple lived in Georgetown while she completed her BME degree. Later she earned a BA in social welfare from McMurry University in Abilene. From 1957 to 1960 she taught elementary school music at Obadiah Knight School in Dallas.

In Abilene, in addition to raising her children, she worked in several fields - real estate management, polygraph secretary, social worker, and church organist for Methodist and Presbyterian congregations.

I have many cherished memories of our very special times with the Sledges while living in Abilene and beyond. I always appreciated Marj´s combining devotion to family while quietly marching to her own drummer and sharing her many talents. Her music and life were a glimpse of the beauty within, a gift that will keep on giving. How fortunate I am to have had her and her family in my life.
