RUBY FATHEREE Obituary

RUBY FATHEREE
McALLEN - Ruby Fatheree was born June 12, 1914 in Willow, Oklahoma to Zuna Ross and John Charles Holden. Her mother died during the flu epidemic when Ruby was only five years old. She and her brother, John, and sister, Bonnie, were sent to live with aunts and uncles until her father remarried her stepmother, Pearl, and the family was reunited in El Reno, Oklahoma. Ruby received her teaching degree from Oklahoma Women's College and began her career as an educator. At that time, young teachers were to be single, never drink, smoke, play cards or dance! In 1941 she married Tom Guy Capps. They had two children, Karen and Tommy. Ruby spent the majority of her teaching career in Pampa, Texas where she taught English for many years before becoming the high school counselor. She touched many young lives during those years and never failed to offer love and understanding along with some good advice. Her job wasn't only at school. She counseled with her students' families in their homes. She could be found at the hospital or the jail rescuing one of her students. On many occasions, she brought them home with her.
After many years as a single mother, Ruby married Gene Fatheree in 1966. Gene had two children, Norma Jean and Richard, whom she embraced as her own. Ruby and Gene moved to McAllen, Texas in 1981. Even though she had retired, Ruby continued to be the "counselor" for friends and family. People were drawn to her for her tolerance, sense of humor, zest for life and sage advice. Although she outlived most of her contemporaries, she had lots of younger friends. After her husband, Gene, died in 1997, Ruby continued to live in McAllen. One of her most enjoyable pastimes was teaching English to young mothers at Su Casa de Esperanza. She had a great deal of influence on her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Their Nana helped set them on a straight course in life.
Ruby is survived by her children, Karen Hunke and her husband Phil (McAllen), Tom Capps (Portland, Oregon), stepdaughter Norma Jean Demmer and her husband, Ron ( San Antonio), stepson Richard Fatheree and his wife, Vicki (Austin). Grandchildren include : Miles Hunke Horton (Kerrville), Merritt Hunke Kennedy and her husband, Paul (Corpus Christi), Alexa Capps Rabb and her husband, John ( Austin), Clint Capps, (Austin), Charlie Capps, (Portland, Oregon), Ellie Capps (Portland, Oregon), Denise Baughman and her husband, Mark, (New Braunfels) , Richard Fatheree and his wife, Sarah, (Austin), Amy Fatheree Lam (Wichita Falls). Great grandchildren include Noe Horton, Nicholas Horton, Kate Kennedy, Cuatro Kennedy, Holden Rabb, Samantha Rabb, Abigail Lam, Grace Lam, and Elie Lam
Ruby faced many challenges through the years with her health but managed to overcome each of them largely due to her great will to live. Even her last challenge of cancer didn't dampen her spirit. She fought it with optimism until the end.
Many thanks to Ruby's doctors and nurses, Beyamar Hospice, Sabina Maldonado, Yolanda Rojas, Noemi Gentry, and Camila Segura for their loving care.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Kreidler Funeral Home in McAllen. A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, McAllen, Texas on Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Quinta Mazatlan, P. O. Box 220, McAllen, Texas 78505 for the "Ruby Pond" and native plant garden to enhance the new education building.

Memories and Condolences
for RUBY FATHEREE

Not sure what to say?

January 5, 2010

Karen and family,
We are so sorry to hear about Ruby passing (just found out today). Obviously, she touched everyone that she came in contact with. I will always remember Ruby's enthusiasm and advice to Brian as we were dating. I will remember her open arms and "love you" even though I knew her only a short amount of time. I will remember her sparkling devilish eyes as I asked her "Can I hide my wedding dress in your house so Brian doesn't peek before the wedding?" She kept it hidden from Brian, although I think she showed it off every chance she got to family and friends. I remember bringing her to the dress shop to pick it up and the excitement she felt for us, two younguns' just starting out in life together. She was a wonderful person. We know she is in a better place with all of her pain. She will always be a part of our memories. Love, Brian and Cheryl Miller (Billings, MT)

I so wish I could be there for the memorial service today. Please know I'm there in spirit! It is so cool to read everything that other people have written about Aunt Ruby...such a remarkable person! I sort of believe that I'm carrying on in her footsteps with my teaching and counseling. I know she lives on in all of you. Mother is very excited to have Aunt Ruby with her in heaven. I hope we can all get together soon!
Love to you all,
Jeannie

My condolences to the entire family on the passing of such a remarkable person.
My best memory of Ruby was a day I got to spend with her at her home in McAllen. The circumstances were profoundly bittersweet. My grandson, her great grandson, Holden Rabb had just been born and his parents, Alexa and John, and Clint had to spend the day with the responsibilities of Janet's passing. I was nervous, although I couldn't show it, to spend the day with Ruby who I hardly knew, and to be taking care of such a little baby. Ruby knew just the right thing to do with baby Holden and we soon got to giggling and talking. She fed me a wonderful lunch with apparently no effort. We talked all day, talked about life and death, heartaches and triumphs and I became a lifelong admirer of her. I am honored to have gotten to love this remarkable person.

Memories of Ruby go back since I was three years of age. Even though she was my dear friend's mother, she treated me the same. Karen and I were so fortunate to share two wonderful mothers. Ruby was a wonderful mother, teacher, friend and mentor. I spent most of my life either laughing or crying with this most amazing lady. Karen, Phil, Tommy, Miles, Merritt ,Paul and great grandchildren my thoughts and love are with you as are Joe's. Glenda Kaufman, Denver, Colorado

Dear Karen and Tom:
My niece, LaJohnna, informed me of Ruby's passing and even tho I was sad, it was a relief to know she was no longer in the pain she had endured for so long!. (LaJohnna had kept me informed for sometime.) I met Ruby many years ago when I was visiting my sister-in-law, Cleona Sears, in Pampa, TX. At the time I thought she was the prettiest lady I had ever seen. She was so jovial and happy and just really touched my heart.
She's with Jesus tonight and we must all be happy and rejoice in the fact, she had many years on this earth and now she's gone to a much better place, where one day we'll all see her again.
God Bless you Karen, Tom and your families and may God be with you as you face these next difficult days. God will see you through it, believe me!

Karen & Phil, Miles & Merritt, Jim and I are so very sorry for your loss. We read the obituary with great interest. Ruby sounds like a person we would have liked to know and loved to call a friend. As soon as we saw her photograph we both mentioned how much of you, Karen, is in her expression.
Our thoughts are with you with love and caring, Karin and Jim Heffner
