Byron "Bart" Barton, age 87 passed away Wednesday, April 29, 2020 at Masonic Pathways in Alma. He was born on July 15, 1932 in Napoleon, Ohio, the son of William and Laura (Fahringer)Barton. He received his B.S. Degree from Ohio State University in 1954. Bart served as an Officer in the U.S. Air Force. On May 19, 1956 he married Connie Niebel at the Sharon Methodist Church in Napoleon, Ohio. He owned and operated an Insurance Agency in Alma for many years until his retirement. Community service was always an important focus for him. He was a former chairman of the Alma Chamber of Commerce and served two terms on the Alma School Board. Bart was a member and Past President of the Alma-St. Louis Rotary Club, served as a former board member with Big Brothers Big Sisters, member of the Alma Masonic Lodge. a member of Alma United Methodist Church and served on the Alma Symphony Council. He was very involved with the Alma Highland Festival, where he served on the Board of Directors, was Festival President in 1979 and Parade Marshal in 2012. Bart was an avid Ohio State football fan. He enjoyed golfing at Pine River Country Club, woodworking, and sharing jokes at the Main Caf. But most importantly, Bart enjoyed spending time with his family at Crystal Lake. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Connie Barton of Alma; two sons, Gregory Barton of Cadillac, MI and Dr. Brian Barton of Arlington, TX; two grandchildren, Jessica Gray of West Palm Beach, FL and Grayson Barton of Grand Rapids, MI. Bart was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Paul and Clyde. Memorial services will be held on Thursday, July 15, 2021 at 1 pm at the Alma United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alma United Methodist Church or to Big Brothers Big Sisters.
