Henry James Elden (September 21, 1930-June 11, 2021). Born and raised in Wyandotte, Michigan, Henry J. Elden resided in St. Clair Shores and died peacefully under the care of his wife, children and grandchildren after developing melanoma. Henry served in the U.S. Army and worked as a brick mason for over forty years and then as a writer, committed to composing letters to newspapers and to political and religious leaders. He shared his work ethic and love of reading on the farm in Lupton, Michigan as he raised his children—Lucia Elden (Barry Alford), Eve Elden (Daniel Forcier), Henry G. Elden (Nichole Stoin), and Jacquelyn Smith (Patrick)—with Myra Frackiewicz Elden. Henry's grandsons—Richard Doherty (Laurel), Frank Doherty (Siobhan O'Laoire), Luke Elden, Maximus Elden and great grandson Leo Elden Doherty—witnessed his strength of character. Henry and his loving wife Carol Langs traveled by train on dozens of trips from "sea to shining sea," visiting family and friends. Henry loved festivals, parades, and dances, especially polka dancing. He was a weekly hospital volunteer in Toledo and then at the Beaumont Hospital in Gross Pointe for fifteen years. Henry is preceded in death by his parents James and Stella Elden, his sister Margaret Tapler, and his brother Lawrence Elden. He will be remembered by all of his friends and family, including his brother Joseph Elden (Delphine) and sister Rosie Abraham, five godsons, and many nieces, nephews and those who read his spirited letters. A funeral Mass will be at St. Gerard Catholic Church in Lansing, Michigan on June 18 at 10:30 a.m. Burial will take place at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, MI at a later date. In lieu of donations, please write a letter to a stranger, a friend, or a loved one.
