Mr. Sampson was my first band director. He knew I loved the tenor sax, even before I knew what it was called. He allowed me to start on tenor instead of alto saxophone, and later in my career influenced me to learn clarinet and drums. He was an extremely accomplished clarinetist, saxophonist and musician. I wouldn't have become a professional musician with high standards without him. Over the years I've tried to get in touch, and my recent attempt led me, most unfortunately, to his obituary. My sincere condolences go to his family.

I was a student of Roger for seven years while he was Band Director at Deland-Weldon Schools, in the 70's. He was perhaps the single most influential person in my life, outside my family, at that time. I always enjoyed his passion for music and his commitment to excellence. He encouraged me to go to music school because he saw in me what others didn't and what I didn't even see in myself. I am still a musician and owe that to him. For that, I am very grateful.

Rob and I send all of our love. We know Roger is not in anymore discomfort and that brings some peace. The world lost a good man, but heaven gained a wonderful angel

Mr Sampson was an outstanding band teacher and helped to positively shape the lives of so many of his students. I was one of his students in Danville from 1984-1988 and have thought about him often throughout the years. My thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family.

Mr. Sampson was the greatest teacher I have had. He demanded integrity, excellence and discipline. He rewarded hard work with more opportunities for achievement. I remember him as caring, protective and generous. I have remembered him often and will miss him.

He made our band the best in the state. He was as hard on us as he was on himself. Thank you for teaching me to be the best at my instrument and to have respect for the music. I hope you found peace in your life.

Mr. Sampson had a HUGE impact on my life through high school. I was lucky enough to have him as my symphonic, marching, and concert band directory and he taught lessons that I have carried well beyond high school to this very day. I'm very sorry to hear this news and send my condolences to his family. God Bless.
