Thomas Mitchell

Thomas George (Tom) Mitchell, 37, was born April 17, 1986 in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan to John Betts Mitchell and Kathleen Mary Kaczynski. Thomas passed on May 8, 2023 at Woodland Hospice in Mt. Pleasant. Tom attended the RESD in Harrison and MMI in Clare and Mt. Pleasant. Tom was known for his cheerful disposition. He made friends wherever he went and taught many the meaning of a life lived with acceptance and grace. Tom loved music, especially in the garden with his stepmother, Jean, and was a prodigious drummer, zipped more bank bags than any banker, and holds the unofficial world record for most times watching 'Christmas Eve on Sesame Street'. Tom canoed in the wilds of Canada and numerous rivers in Michigan and throughout the US, walked over 1,200 miles in swimming pools, and went many a mile on wheelchair walks with his papa. Tom's happy place was always Indian Trails Camp in Grand Rapids, which he attended for over 30 years and where, more than anywhere else, he was free to be himself. Thomas is survived by his parents John and Jean Mitchell of Mt. Pleasant and Kathleen Kaczynski and Alison Horton of Cedar; siblings Ben Staffin of Boston, MA and Rebecca Staffin of Seattle, WA; aunts and uncles G. Thomas and Cindy Mitchell of St. Louis, MO, Alinde Moore of Cincinnati, OH, Steve and Becky VanZile of Sturgis, MI, and Tom and Dorothy Kaczynski of Willoughby, OH; numerous cousins, and friend, Samantha Pankey.
