Thelma "Lee" Ray Wroten
Anaheim Hills, CA - Beloved mother, sister, and grandmother, Thelma "Lee" Ray Wroten, age 94, passed away at her residence at Anaheim Hills, CA on June 12, 2021. The daughter of Effie Lacey Ray and Alexander Ray, Lee was born in Clyde, Ohio, June 6, 1927. She helped the family on the small fruit and vegetable farm they owned and attended Clyde schools, graduating from Clyde High School. She worked her way through Ohio University, along with help from her father, and earned a B.F.A in 1948. She was a talented painter, sculptor, silversmith, and seamstress.
She began her teaching career in high school art in Galion, Ohio. She taught art, as well as one year of physical education, also in high schools in Mansfield, Cuyahoga Falls, Youngstown, and Dayton, OH.
In 1964, she moved her family to Anaheim, California and was hired to teach third grade at Clara Barton Elementary School. She simultaneously took college classes to be recertified in elementary education. Upon receiving her elementary education certificate, she also taught third grade at Mel Gauer Elementary, where she met her husband, Wallace Lloyd Wroten. They were married on February 14, 1970.
She retired with her husband, Lloyd, after 33 years of teaching and was still in contact with some of her former students. They moved to Paradise, CA and lived there for more than 25 years. Her husband, Lloyd, died in 2008. After the devastating Camp Fire in Paradise, from which Lee was narrowly rescued, she moved to Brookdale Knoll Ranch in Anaheim Hills to be closer to her younger daughter, Kathleen and her husband Don and children. Our family is forever grateful to the wonderful welcome and care provided.
Lee is survived by her daughter Kathleen Cardinal (Dr. Don Cardinal) and her grandchildren, Megan (Alex) Doty and Nicholas (Rachel) Cardinal, and by her daughter Dr. Cynthia Mahaffey and grandson Edward Simpson (Jamie Ramlawi), her sister Barbara Ray Bishop, her sister-in law Janene Ray and many nieces and nephews, as well as many friends. Her brother, Glenn Victor Ray and her sister, Betty Ray Lacumsky, and her brothers-in law Calvin Bishop and Gilbert Lacumsky, predeceased her.
Lee was a faithful Christian and attended church and sang in choirs most of her life, until illness prevented her. Her most recent membership was at Paradise Alliance Church, Paradise, CA, where she attended for over 25 years.
Lee's family is grateful to the staff, chaplain, and hospice workers at Brookdale Retirement Community for their care of Thelma Lee and to the seniors' minister of Paradise Alliance Church. Additional appreciation goes to Shannon (Funeral Home) for their after care. Lee will be interred beside her husband Lloyd at Glenn Oaks Memorial Park, Chico, CA. A virtual celebration of life will be held sometime in the future.
