Arthur Glikin Obituary

Arthur David Glikin, 63, of Elizabethtown, passed away Tuesday, May 17, 2022, at the Robley Rex VA Medical Center in Louisville.

His beloved wife, Rebecca, was at his side. Art was a brave soldier until the end, fighting cancer and lupus. Despite the odds, he remained positive and recently told Rebecca, "If we lose this battle, always know I am thrilled about our lives together."

Art was born in Passaic, New Jersey, on May 14, 1959, the oldest child of Barry and Madeline Glikin.

He was a 1977 graduate of Colonia High School, Colonia, New Jersey, and a 1981 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York. He was a resident graduate of the U.S. Army War College, Command & General Staff College and Army Management Staff College; and held a Master's in Public Administration from Western Kentucky University. He was a lifelong Mason and a qualified Army parachutist.

Art retired at the rank of colonel in October 2010 after 29 years of service and later from federal civilian service as the Chief, Resource Programs Branch, Human Resources Command, Fort Knox. As a soldier and civil servant, he served in numerous operations research/systems analysis and financial management positions and received numerous awards to include the Legion of Merit and the Meritorious Service Medal. He was well-known in the Pentagon, where he loved working.

Art's greatest achievement, however, was being a devoted husband to Rebecca; a wonderful son, son-in-law, brother and uncle; a loyal friend; and a person of utmost integrity. He prided himself in providing honest answers to hard questions. In retirement, he enjoyed following the stock market, mastering financial and data software programs, watching college sports, and playing The Godfather movie trilogy endlessly. He also took great pleasure in phone calls with his best friends, pizza and wine nights with Rebecca, and preparing breakfast or dinner for company.

Art was preceded in death by his father, Barry Glikin; and mother-in-law, Dora Parish.

He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Rebecca Parish-Glikin of Elizabethtown; his mother, Madeline Glikin, and sister, Helene Glikin, both of Carbondale, Illinois; his brother, Leonard Glikin, and nephew, Brendan Glikin, both of Rahway, New Jersey. Additionally, he will be missed by Rebecca's large family, including four sisters-in-law, Barbara Greer and JoAnn (Bob) Love, both of Elizabethtown, and Darlene (William) Beam and Linda Parish, both of Bardstown; his brother-in-law, George (Linda Dean) Parish of Shelbyville; and seven nephews and nieces, their spouses and children.

The funeral is at noon Thursday, May 26, at Trowbridge Funeral Home in Elizabethtown. Interment follows in Kentucky Veterans Cemetery-Central in Radcliff.

Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and continues from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the American Cancer Society, the Lupus Foundation of America or to an animal shelter of your choice. Art and Rebecca believed strongly in pet adoption, especially older ones who need a home, and enjoyed four wonderful pets during their marriage,Wally, Spunky, Annabel and most recently, Tyler, described by Art as "the best medicine" he could have had over the last year.

Art was a good friend and we shared many memorable events and challenges together. We lost touch after we retired. I was shocked to find an old friend and fellow vet had passed. My sincere condolences to Rebecca and the family.

Rebecca, so sorry about Art's going home to be with the Lord. Bonnie and I were blessed by meeting you today (22 Sep 22) in the commissary, but I am sad about the news you imparted. I worked with Art in Recruiting Command and Human Resources Command before my retirement in March 2022, before Art's passing. Art was a terrific co-worker and fellow officer. His opinion was highly regarded.

"Me, I'm a well kept secret
But mysteries, they have their end.
And now I see there's another part of me
I found it somewhere in a Friend...
I found Me, somewhere in a Friend."

Rest easy Arty...until we meet again.

My thoughts and prayers are with you.
I will always remember Art, he helped me to survive my last years working. I was his budget analyst for his program in DC. My last few years of working he hired me onto his program team in Ft Knox. He made my years before retirement enjoyable. He always made us feel like we were important to our team.
