Dr. Stephen Vaught Obituary

Dr. Stephen Kelly Vaught, 78, of Elizabethtown, passed away peacefully at home Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2025, in the presence of his two sons.

Stephen Kelly Vaught was born Feb. 7, 1947, to Reid and Faustine Vaught at Danville Hospital. Steve was raised in the "old house" on their Bethelridge farm with his sister, Sondra Layman. After graduating from Casey County High School in 1964, Steve pursued a higher education. Having been raised with a strong work ethic and desire to help others, Steve attended the University of Kentucky for undergraduate school. He then graduated from UK's medical school in 1971 and finished his urological residency at UK in 1976.

Following his academic pursuits, Steve spent two years as an active-duty urologist at Fort McPherson in Atlanta, achieving the rank of major. After exiting the Army in 1978, he moved to Elizabethtown, where he went into private practice. He later joined Surgical Specialists in Elizabethtown, where he continued to work until his retirement in 2017. After retirement, Steve most often could be found on the golf course.

Steve dedicated his life to caring for others, whether it be his patients or family. Steve had a special love for Elizabethtown and the people who reside in it. He always felt a strong desire to give back to a community that became the place he considered a home for himself and his family. Steve raised his two boys in Elizabethtown, where he saw them transform into the best versions of themselves. When grandchildren came around, he became better known as "Pop." Whether it be attending countless soccer games, graduations, recitals or other performances, he never took a day off from being Pop and letting his grandchildren know his love was unconditional.

Dr. Vaught is survived by his two sons, Brian Kelly Vaught and Tod David Vaught; his two daughters-in-law, Andrea and Mona Vaught; his sister, Sondra Layman; and his four grandchildren, Dr. Emma Vaught, Stephen Vaught, Jacob Kelly Vaught and Raquel Vaught. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends.

Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 9, at Brown Funeral Home in Elizabethtown.

Dr Vault was my Urologist for many years until his Retirement in 2017.
He always had extra time to talk about things such as what I had been doing as well as his Golf Game.
Such a great Dr.
A Life WELL LIVED.
Prayers for the Family.

Always enjoyed Dr Vaught´s light hearted humor. He has supported our cause of golfing with Scramble for Scholarships. He mastered the short game and was to rescue his team creating a strong bond of fellowship. His quiet favorite uncle demeanor will be missed but be forever in our hearts.

Rest in peace ole friend. Always a friend as well as my Dr. for many years. Dr Vaught was always a friend to my family especially checking on my daughter Kimberly during her illness. You will be missed!

When I was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2011, Dr. Vaught was my urologist. The care he rendered was exceptional. He especially took the time to both talk and listen, and gave me his personal phone number. Although my physical treatment was at IU in Bloomington, Dr. Vaught monitored my treatment every step of the way. I considered him not only my doctor, but also my friend.

My sincere condolences to his family. I suspect many in Hardin and surrounding counties are grieving with you at Steve's passing. He was a good man.

Dr. Vaught was a great doctor. He did my sons hernia surgery when he was 3 months old. Dr. Vaught was so compassionate and caring and left an impact on my heart by taking such good care of my son. That was in 1988 and I can remember it like it was yesterday. My heart goes out to the family of this great man.

Sending deepest condolences to your family. Dr. Vaught was one of the physicians I trusted most over many years. He was an excellent doctor, cared for his patients & their families, & was a straight-talker when diagnoses were hard to hear. Prayers ascend for peace and comfort as you begin to navigate this time.
