Irmgard Thompson

Irmgard Thompson, 93, of Radcliff, died, after an extended illness, Thursday, May 6, 2021, at Helmwood Health Care of Elizabethtown.

She was the daughter of Gustav and Sophie Werner of Germany. After high school, she was trained and worked as a beautician.  She was a member of the Greatest Generation.

Known as Emily to her neighbors, friends and family, she was a native of Nidda, Germany.  She married her late husband, D. Maurice Thompson, in March 1948, while he was serving as part of the occupational forces during World War II in the U.S. Army. After leaving Germany, she resided at Fort Riley, Kansas; Vincennes, Indiana; Fort Knox; Orleans, France, and terminated her travels with the military back at Fort Knox. After her husband's military career ended in 1964, she and her family settled in Radcliff. Emily was a very loving and devoted wife, mother and homemaker. In addition, she was very loyal to her friends and neighbors and could be called upon at any time for assistance or just to listen.

She became a naturalized U.S. citizen in June 1951, and continued to study hard to learn proper English. She served as a volunteer teacher's assistant in both her sons' elementary school classes and occasionally taught basic German. Irmgard also was an assistant den mother to her sons' Cub Scout packs and participated as a chaperon in a variety of school activities. She enjoyed ice skating, bowling, dancing, working in her yard and watching movies from the 30s, 40s and 50s. Although she liked riding in cars and seeing the scenery, she never drove a vehicle.  Irmgard looked forward to her every other year visits to Germany to celebrate with her 30 high school classmates of 1942.

Emily was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, as well as two sisters and three brothers, all of Germany. 

Survivors include two sons, Gary L. Thompson (wife Pamela) of Ashland City, Tennessee, and Ranee L. Thompson of Vine Grove; along with a few nieces and nephews in the U.S. and Germany.

The funeral is at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 8, at Nelson-Edelen-Bennett Funeral Home in Radcliff. Burial follows in North Hardin Memorial Gardens in Radcliff.

Visitation is from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
