John Martin Obituary

John L. Martin, 85, of Elizabethtown, passed from this life Saturday, Feb. 25, 2017, at his home.

John was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to James and Caroline Martin. He grew up in a large family with four brothers and five sisters and valued the close ties with his family.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1948. Ten years later on his second assignment at Fort Knox, he met and married the love of his life, Virginia Bogard.

His military career included service in Korea and Vietnam. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, Bronze Star, two Overseas Bars, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with four campaign stars and the National Defense Service Medal with oak leaf cluster. He retired in 1971 in the grade of CW2 and made his home in Elizabethtown, working at Fort Knox in vehicle maintenance.

He is a member of St. James Catholic Church. John's faith could be seen through acts of love, he always was willing to help anyone in need. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending time with family, especially his grandchildren. The last years of his life were difficult, fighting long battles with both multiple mylomea and Alzheimers. He was able to win the fight with cancer, but Alzheimers slowly took everything but his love.

He was preceded in death by his wife Virginia; his parents; two brothers, Fran and David; and two sisters, Dorothy Puglio and Helen Gold.

John is survived by a son, Ronald Martin; a daughter, Patricia (Craig) Brown; two grandsons, Garrett and Jordan Brown; two brothers, Richard and Thomas Martin; three sisters, Patricia Allman, Mary Lipinski and Bernadette Raab; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Mass is at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. James Catholic Church in Elizabethtown with the Rev. Martin Linebach officiating. Interrment will be at a later date in Kentucky Veterans Cemetery-Central in Radcliff.

Visitation is from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday and continues at 9 a.m. Saturday at Brown Funeral Home in Elizabethtown.

The family requests expressions of sympathy be made to Hosparus or for Mylomea or Alzheimers research.
