Larry Eugene Spurling of Turtletown, Tennessee, passed away peacefully at his residence Sunday, October 5, 2025, with his beloved family holding his hands.
He was born at home in Pine Ridge, Tennessee, February 15, 1944, to the late James and Christine Runion Spurling.
His family loved to hear him recount his childhood memories of helping his mother milk the family cow in the mornings, shooting marbles, and changing into play clothes after school so that his school clothes would stay clean.
Larry attended Turtletown Elementary School and was a 1962 graduate of Copper Basin High School. He was employed at Lakewood General Motors Plant in Atlanta, Georgia, on the Chevrolet assembly line in the 1960s. He later became an iron worker and worked on various construction projects in Atlanta, including the Omni Coliseum. After returning to the Basin area, he worked for Cities Services Company and Tennessee Chemical Company for almost 30 years until retirement as a maintenance foreman.
For the past several years, Larry could be found sitting on the porch wearing overalls and his favorite cap or taking rides through the mountains. A fixer of many things and a keen reader of National Geographic, he enjoyed nothing more than seeing his grandchildren grow up, playing cards, watching NASCAR and #9 Bill Elliott, eating lemon pie accompanied by a cold glass of milk, and entertaining the family by teasing his wife of 60 years.
Larry was preceded in death by daughter and son-in-law, Amy Renee and Donald Chancey; grandson, Matthew Chancey; brother, Glen Spurling; sister and brother-in-law, Florence and David Deal; brother-in-law, J.D. Price; and nephews, Ricky Deal and Jerome Price.
Larry is survived by his wife, Janice Spurling, of the home, as well as their children and grandchildren: Angie Harbison, Ducktown, Tennessee; Richard and Kathy Spurling, Chattanooga, Tennessee; Audrey Spurling, Navarre, Florida; Collin Thomas, Turtletown, Tennessee; Madison Spurling, Franklin, Tennessee; Abby and Hunter Newman, Cleveland, Tennessee; Katie Thomas, Yokosuka, Japan; Burch Harbison, Denver, Colorado; Gracie Spurling, Chattanooga, Tennessee; and Thomas Spurling, Auburn, Alabama. His brother and sister-in-law, Edward and Chris Spurling, Benton, and sister, Marlie Price, Phoenix, Arizona.
Larry's wishes were to be cremated, and no services are planned. Burial Will be at a later date in Zion Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family wishes to thank Amedisys Hospice Care for their kindness and support during the last few months of his illness.
