Russell Hughes

Russell Glenn Hughes, age 66, of McCaysville, passed away Friday, December 5, 2025, at his home, surrounded by his family.
He was born August 24, 1959, in Copperhill, to the late Rev. Howard Ray Hughes and Merlene Locke Hughes.
Russell was a member of Welcome Hill #2 Baptist Church. He was a beloved husband, uncle, and friend. Russell enjoyed writing gospel music. He wrote 21 songs and holds copyrights to 17 of those.
He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Lorie Ann Bearden; brother-in-law, Donnie Nicholson; nephew, Zackary Nicholson; and great-nephew, Teigan Hughes.
Russell is survived by his wife, Katherine "Kathy" Hughes; brother, Alton Hughes; sister, Stephanie Nicholson; son and daughter-in-law, Nathan and Angelia Hughes; grandchildren, Eli Hughes and Caroline Hughes; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and other extended family.
A funeral service was held Tuesday, December 9, 2025, at 11 a.m. from the Akins-Cobb Blue Ridge Chapel with the Rev. Gary Waters and the Rev. Grayson Jones officiating.
Music was provided by Cody and Tamra Payne. Interment followed in the Welcome Hill #2 Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Adam Hughes officiating.
Pallbearers were James Hughes, Blake Hughes, Bryson Hughes, Cody Allen, Chris Green, and Chris O'Neal. Honorary pallbearers were Brandon Fontaine, Neil Derryberry, and Sambo Hughes.
The family visited with friends at the funeral home Monday evening from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m.
